screeching window noise

On sunday it just finished snowing and it was freezing out. When I was leaving my girls bro rolled up on the side of me and I rolled down my window it made a loud sound. When I went to roll it back up it wanted to go up then it got stuck and went down. I hit the button a couple of more times and it finally went up. When I roll it up and down and makes some horrible scratching sound that sounds like rocks or sand are between my door and window. No scratches on the window. I talked to my friend and he said that I messed up the window regulator because it was freezing out. Just wanted to have other input.

Spray some silicone lubricant in the window tracks and the screeching should go away, plus your windows will roll up and down much more smoothly.

I am hoping the silicone spray will do it, but honestly I doubt it. Most guys are thinking about the common problem with those windows... but in our cases it is WAY WORSE than that. I am hoping though that nothing internally got ****ed up.

In the meantime, I am still trying to buy the silicone spray. Went to Autozone (and yes.. they had finally the updated Haynes Manual 1993-2004) annd Pepboys.... no luck... those guys didnt even know what i was talking about...

Anyway... whoever fixes this problem ,please post here!!

Skier, once i finally find this **** spray, i'll clean both horizontal weather rubber strips (which "guides" the window) and the vertical rubber track against the door column. Then spray the same areas with the silicone.

Is that clear?

Bborges, Thanks... clear on that now.

inspiredbykey, If replacing the regulator works for you please note the cost, and if you could take a few pics (getting in the door panel & the regulator replacement) that would be great.

Thanks guys...

Furthermore Inspired, can u please confirm if the problem is really the regulator? I mean, once u have the door panels out, see if the noise is indeed coming from the regulator or sand/dirty somewhere in the tracks.

I'd appreciate that man!

May be you can do some Home DIY store to find it
I bought my in Home Depot long ago
so you might find it there

I Have fix the problem
My problem was slow close speed and sometimes it will struck at 1/2 or 1/4 way of the window.
Just clean the track with the rag and spay the silicone spray
It works like a charm

I bought may silicone spray at the toyota dealership when i was there with my dad, it was only like $4. Fixed the squeaking and they went faster.
I also got my windows tinted last week and when i first rolled them down the back windows both got stuck at the bottom and would not roll up again for a few minutes. Moral of the story clean the window tracks perfectly and do not let that gunk build up in the tracks or on the top of the window.

I've had the same problem for about a year now. I took my panel off and moved the window up and down many times. I can't see anything rubbing but it sounds like a rock against the glass. I have tint and can't see any scratching so I think if something was rubbing on the window the tint would rip.. If the regulator is broken I don't know why it has worked fine except for the noise for this long. I know I went through many regulators on my '89 max.
Please keep us posted if anyone finds a cure.

When I take off the panel I will look to see if they tracks are dry. If so I am going to spray some silicone and clean the tracks. Hopefully this works so I can return the regulator. If not I will install the regulator and let you guys know if this solves the problem. I will try to take pics of the install.

I had the same problem

Guys,

I had the same problem as described above about a month ago. Like described, I heard a horrible scratching noise, much like that of rocks or sand in between the window and the door panal. I also have tinted windows and noticed no scratching on the window. I was advised the lubricant method...it didnt work. Save yourself the trouble and get a new regulator. That is the problem. Often, the wires on the pulley get crossed up and rub together which results in the horrible noise your hearing (as I discovered for myself). Me and the old man installed a new one in one afternoon. It was a $90 part. Save yourself the labor and put a new one in!

All, Just finished pulling my door apart. I cleaned all channels and lubricated eveything that moves, even the cable the motor uses to operate the regulator. It is definateley the regulator that is bad. You can actually see a nylon (or neoprene) part that slides up and down the central window guide. Neoprene is a tough hard type of plastic, but it is not impermeable. I can see dirt embeded into the plastic. The lurication is helping the motor to work less hard, sparing that. I will order the regulator, $92 at the local stealership, but could be cheaper on the web. Someone else here was going to replace thier regulator. Hopefully they will post thier finding.

Damn... It is freaking cold and I have to open door panels and swap regulators...

Thats my luck!

Anyone has any tip on where to buy this thing cheaper?

The "Ice" myth has been busted. It was almost 60 out Saturday and it still made the noise...

For those interested in ending the noise of the bad window regulator. They are $92 at my local stealership parts counter. They are $74.95 (shipped w/ lifetime warrantee) at the following link. Chances are good that it will fail again for those who are planning to leep thier Maxima.

Thought some would appreaciate saving a few $'s, or you can be this guy getting burned by the stealership.

How much was it shipped? If shipping is included that's a great price at $62.46!
