Just wondering if anyone has made this mod for our cars. If not, does anyone know why; is there a specific reason for it not being made. If not, I was thinking about machining some if enough people are interested. Thanks guys.

A composite spacer/gasket would reduce heat transfer and thus (slightly) increase power. [/giant nitpicking @sshole]

 

I saw that one coming, but that would be more along the lines of a thermal gasket, not a spacer.

 

Aside from that didn't someone try and get a new thicker gasket made before but the company after trying to figure it out said that the Stock Gasket was already made thick and would not prove beneficial? Maybe this is not along the same line but it may be useful.

 

Modify your thermostat to open earlier for cooler temps...


Heat soak on these cars has been determined to be quite an issue re: 1/4 times. Unless you're a DQ like me or want the best possible times, just take rests in between runs and put some ice bags on the IM.

 

They make Nismo Thermostats that open at a lower temp.

 

Jimes modification is good enough...I'm cheap.

 

That really works. On a particularly hot day I tried this.

Sequence of trap speeds (usually 20-25 minutes between runs):

Then I put on two bags and waited for 45 minutes or so:

Spacer that does what? Acts as a thermal sheild or [rovide better airflow, as the Z33 spacers do?

What did the OP have in mind?

 

Our IM's aren't desinged as the Z33 so that aspect will provide no gain.

The phenolic stuff may benefit since the Al IM is prone to heat soak.

 

I say we run some new coolant lines around the IM and run them through an auxillary cooler...

 

OR... you could swap to an 00VI, which provides a thermal upgrade, during which you bypass the coolant line to the IM/TB, and then with a low temp thermostat you're good to go.

But no one's done this before..

 

Toss a 00VI on there...


Coolant lines would probably make it hotter since the IM isn't as hot as the block for which the actual coolant is running through.

That's why some by-pass coolant lines to the TB because it warms it some

Actually I should have stated that I meant a seperate cooling circuit... that only circulates around the IM and to a seperate cooler... (of course you'd need a pump, etc.).

It was more of a joke than anything else. Heck, I might even throw on some extra CPU heatsink/coolers I have lying around

 

I bought a chunk of Phenolic material a while back, just have to pick it up and plan on giving it a try. Will post a pic when I get it done. In the spring I am going to hit the dyno I think so I can try it with and without there to see if any benefit other than the heat issue. Its also recommended to install SS studs because the heat will just travel through the steel bolts even with the spacer.

PS Someone should hook the IM up the the A/C line vs radiator and see what happens.

Maybe spray water on it between runs like the V8 guys do to their radiators. Now don't anyone try that, could be hazardous to the engine.

 

putting a spacer on the USIM will result in even less top end. thats not a good idea. maybe the MEVI could use a spacer since it has little low end, but it could adversely affect the top end.
