Probably buying this '00 SE - Would you haggle on these items?

Here is the car. The photos aren't candy coated... it is very clean. $9900 loaded with 96,000 miles (he has the miles slightly wrong in the ad)
http://www.specialtiesauto.com/detail.aspx?iid=872485

Here are the haggle issues...

Seller only has one key. Nissan part dept. tells me new key $65 plus programming $45 total before tax $110.00 for second key.

Car only has one keyless entry remote and it sucks (the unlock button is 80% DOA) Nissan part dept. says $89.95 each for that. (I know I can find cheaper on ebay)

Sunglass compartment has broken latch and the broken piece is missing. Our '00 SE that got totaled had same thing but I was able to use Shoe Goo to glue it back together and it worked fine for the 1 year we drove the car.
Can't find one of those on ebay and Nissan parts dept. wants $50.92 for it.

Given the price, miles, condition, ETC... would you haggle for $100-$200 (at least) off the asking price of $9900?

I know may be a stupid question because who pays what a dealer is asking... Except I know this dealer (brother in law bought a Yukon XL from him 1 year ago and the dealer/broker gave me advise when we bought our 2000se that got wrecked and totaled). Book value on the car is $11,400 in our zip code.
He just typically moves fast cars fast and I actually trust the guy. Hard to say since he has the car dealer gene in his DNA.

There's always room for negotiation. From my experience selling cars, there is typically $2-$5K mark-up on used vehicles. That's where I made most of my money since no one holds a lot of profit in new cars anymore. The price he has listed seems fair, but trust me, he is making plenty of money off of you.

i just got a 75k mile 2kse 5spd for 9000. Excellent condition, some wear but thats expected. Paint was top notch with like few scratches. And mine is black which raises the price because its more prefferable. Talk it down

sure talk to him, depending on how you approach it he might drop a couple hundred dollars.

just for the reference: I bought my car in June 2005 with 73k miles for $9.7k asking price was 10k. SE, 5-spd, moon-roof. Near perfect exterior/interior. Very good mechanical condition (except for a couple of sensors )

definitely talk it down...that's too much to ask for that high of mileage. I'm no expert but the one thing that I took most from my negotiations class in school is that sellers usually "high-ball" while buyers should counter with "low-ball"...further finding some kind of mutual agreement for both parties in between.

Although your concerns are minor, they are still completely legitimate. I would try him for $7800 in which he'll probably laugh at you but hey you could probably get it at $8400 after you show him you know how to negotiate.

Any sale in which the buyer has to go about doing extra work is not good customer service IMO...

You must be looking at my car! My sunglass holder is broken, I only have one key and one of my fobs sucks azz. I would ask him to shave off a couple hundred since you're buying it from him. You should have two keys.

And about the sunglass holder, get the one from an 02. It's much better. Spring loaded and no tab to break off. I did this when my original one broke in the same way yours did.

My sunglass holder is fine... But I do have two crappy remotes.... By the time I get to unlock I am standing next to my drivers door and have been there for some time.

The one that I have that sucks is annoying because the buttons no longer click. They are like soft rubber it's annoying I have to push my fingers down so far.

Try holding it up to your jaw when you are far way. That helps the range.

haggling is fine. He may go along with it as a goodwill gesture, but unless the both of you know that you'll walk out on the deal in a heatbeat, then it won't be much.

The other thing is, speaking as a cardealer myself, when someone makes a big deal about the last hundred or two dollars, if they have a problem down the line, I feel less guilty about saying "you wanted this car for the very least amount of money I could possibly sell it for, from where am I supposed to be able to pay for XXX." You get the idea.
You're buying a good car, so that isn't likely to be a issue. But a little extra profit has bought a lot of goodwill at my store more than once. What ever that's worth.

I don't know why, but it seems like Max's cost more in the Utah region. I paid a little more for mine than I probably could have gotten it for (would have been much cheaper if I had bought from private party), but it all depends on how you feel about the deal. Some days I regret not fighting more, but then I realize that I have only put tires on my car and an oil change since I got it 6 months ago (where as I was spending almost $200/month in repairs on my jetta and I was happy to get rid of it).

If i were you, i would talk him down, i bet he'll go down atleast $500, but you need to have KBB edmunds and all those quotes with you.
I got my 2000 maxima for $7700 with 75,000 miles and no problems at all (5 spd)
so my first offer for that car would probably be $1,000 lower than what he's asking, and work your way to the mid ground.

$10k for a 96,000 mile maxima. I wouldn't touch it. Save a little more and get a 5.5 gen. I've seen 02 with that kinda mileage going for 12,000-14,000.

Could possibly have him get the parts at dealer cost or possibly have him provide the repairs if he won't come down on the price. Negitiate price with/and repairs. Just my .02

Yeah I just got a second key made for my car, was $105 lol they wanted to know if I wanted more.
Wish I had known when I bought mine 6 months ago I probably would have asked for that to get thrown in with the deal.

For a price comparison, my 00 GLE was $9672 + taxes, title, and fees. They wanted $11,900, and we started by offering them $9000. Although my Max was in good shape, the leather seats are pretty worn (not a deal breaker for me). But I got only 1 remote with the bad unlock button, the Bose headunit had issues (but works fine now... somehow), and the Bose sub had a bad wiring harness. Then there's the problem I'm having now....

edit: Bought the car January 9.

I would certainly make an attempt to negotiate the deal for this car. $100 to $200 would not break the deal if the salesman wants to make the sale. The things you need to replace are gonna set you back some $$$, so I think you should do what you can to haggle a better deal. The car is a nice looker and is in good shape. FYI -- I was able to haggle my 2000 Super Black GLE w/black leather interior and 84,000 miles from 11,500 to just over 10,000 from a Lexus dealer here in WI.

Keep in mind that the customer is always right!! Good luck with the deal; keep us posted.

I agree totally on them being more pricey here in Utah. Probably because of the I-15 500 that runs every day... people want a car with *****! You really need it to survive here. Rush hour traffic on I-15 through the heart of Salt Lake City
without accidents ahead... 75mph right lane... then add 5mph for every lane you move towards the center which generally runs around 85-90 IN TOWN! I'm from Denver and can't believe how fast people drive here...

Anyhow, to the deal... He came up with the second key and knocked $50.00 off for the price of the sunglass holder and filled the tank w/premium... After I test drove it... it was on fumes. So theres another $40.00... Plus, he is going to stand in line for me at DMV to get the plates. All in all he only came down a fraction but I am OK with the deal in general. And the Max is parked in our garage until I can find something to have to run out and get at the store... Actually... I am out of coffee... hmmmmm...
Shift_brew

Oh yeah... 5 people in the poll voted to go for $200 and 8 voted to go for more... Thanks everyone...

one more thing... In Salt Lake County there are only two DMV offices to get your plates. Rediculas! Last time I was there it took 45-60 minutes... so, that's worth something... Is it that way in Utah County KyMan?
