insane windshield wiper

ok so I know this sounds crazy, but my windshield wipers have a mind of their own.

Ever since i got my max, as soon as you start the car the windshield wipers start (even if the switch for the wipers is on off), they go at a moderate speed (equivalent to speed 1) and do maybe 20 wipes, then stop. There is basically no way to stop it and it was really annoying and I got tired of the funny looks. Took it to my friend @ nissan, he is actually the parts/service manager, they couldn't figure it out. no one I know can figure it out.

Anyway, somehow we realized if we remove one of the relays it will stop this, but at a few costs. 1. the "speed 1" of my wipers don't work, 2. intermittent doesn't work (its been 4 months since my i haven't had mine while they were fixing something else, long story so if the maximas dont have intermittent forgive me) and 3. if i turn of my wipers while its in the middle of wiping the windshield, it stops wherever it was when i turn them off. Well i'm finally fixing everything that was wrong w/ my car and I'd really like to fix this as well.

Anyone have any ideas? sorry about the long post

My guess would be a bad wiper switch(on the steering column).

See if you can get one out of a junkyard and swap it out. I think it's worth a shot. Have you tried replacing the relays or just removing them? Also, do you have wiring schematics?

The stalk that sticks out of the steering column, that you turn the wipers on and off with...that's what were talking about. It's very easy to replace. You just replace that switch. Just take the plastic cover off the steering column, then you'll see how that switch just plugs in to the yolk on the steering column, there's 2 screws to remove and then it just pulls right out. If you can get one from a junkyard to test, that's great, although even a new one from the dealer should be pretty cheap.

If replacing the stalk doesn't fix it, replace the relay.

hmm, never thought that a bad switch could make them start everytime the car does but at this point i'm willing to try anything. I happen to know someone that has a 97 maxima that was totaled and i've basically just been taking parts off for free (sort of) so I might try that. I'll keep you guys posted.
