I got the vias off, the cup seems to be attached to the vias, but the spring is loose. does that mean the vias was good or bad? do i still need to jb weld it?

the spring is ok.. it shouldn't be weld in to the cup... you can weld it back but nothing will happen.. your vias was NOT broken... put everything back together you are good to go

While you have it apart, you might as well pour a little JB in there as a preventative measure.

Thats what I would do anyway.

1) the cup is not attached = broken

2) im pretty sure you do. I think I've heard of ways to check it without taking it out.

Another problem with VIA is that the cup can rotate freely on the shaft even if it is attached to it, so when you take it apart check for play at the base of the cup too...

Will a new IAC valve fix a VIAS problem? Just wondering because there is one for sale and I'd rather replace a part than JB weld it.

Thanks.

No, they are two different parts controlling two different functions of an engine. IACV controls air volume during idle (when TB flap is closed) located in TB and VIAS opens a passage in upper intake manifold at 5K RPM located in upper intake...

i dont mean to thread jack or anything but i checked the vias on my car and i reved it to over 5000 rpm and the arm on the vias thing moves. does that mean for sure it is working or could that mean the arm is moving but it isnt connected on the inside of the vias?

When you drive, when the RPMs come to 5K and after they get to ~6K, the area in between, do you hear engine rev'ing faster in that area or does it sound the same as before 5K? It should accelerate faster between 5K and 6K. That is the safest way to tell if it works...

I know what you mean amimax, i have the same thing, revved it past 5k with the throttle body and saw the arm move but im not sure if its working or not, since i cant really hear it. The intake tone does change though, well it should since my g/f just got an altima with the 2.5, i didnt even know it HAD a VIAS til i floored it and when it got to 5k the engine got deeper and sounded a little more agressive til it shifted, it was awesome

When you take the assembly off, you will see a metal cup inside...

if you hear the changeover than you should be fine...no need to take it apart...and you saw the arm move...? the other way to do it is disconnect the harness from the vias selenoid and take it for a drive to see the power difference...
