06 Ion Redline vs 97 Max

My friend has an 06 Saturn Ion Redline competition package and I have a 97 max with a full exhaust, he thinks he would smoke me at the track but I tell him it could be close espesialy because he cant drive a stick as well as I can (I have more experience at the track.) What do you guys think the out come would be? He wants to put money on it.

it would be close; according to edmunds.com the stock redline is 2933 pounds...a 97 max is around that ball park. the race will be decided by who's the better driver..

to be honest, i think that you might be able to take him.

The faster car is the redline. But considering the fact that you are a better driver, a 1/4mile race could be very close between the two of you, but again, if he nails he launch decently then you are probably going be playing catch up. The redline runs mid 14's and traps in the 97mph area so you have a chance if he doesn't drive it to its full potential, but watch out up top considering he is trapping a solid 4mph or so higher than you.

Stop being and get to the track and find out..

I think these threads should be outlawed... Who cares if his friend has that car. All we, or at least I care about is what the slips were, modlist, weather condotions, and altitude.

dunno bout the new 06 ion redlines, but i drove the blown 05 redline and i didnt think it was faster than the maxima. with the blown 4 cyl it was about the same hsp as the maxima (stock). If they are anything like the 05s then you will smoke him...

I duno tho, good thing you asked

getting smoked by a saturn =

If he knows how to drive, the redline will win everytime. If you are a 5spd, then there's a chance you can run 15 flat at the track. He will most likely run mid/high 14s if he can get a 2.3 60', which is easy to get.

But all it takes is for him to mess up the launch and you to get a 2.2 60 and he might not catch up. But he will be walking you down after half track if you get a good launch. Go to the track and post some numbers so we can see.

You had three redlines? Otherwise, you had the typical Saturn grocery getter, not the supercharged ecotec that has over 200 hp. You are comparing apples to oranges.

The Saturn Ion Redline is stock-for-stock quite a bit faster than a 97 Max.

Does he have any mods on the Redline?
All he has to do is put in a 3" pulley (15 psi instead of stock 12) and he is in the low 14s. Even without a pulley and some basic stuff like headers, intake, exhaust, they are usually in the low-mid 14s, too. (14.2-14.5)

Browsing some redline forum, I see a lot of 14.5-14.9s coming out of guys with little experience and 2.3-2.4 60 foot times.

I would hope the guy seriously doesn't know how to drive.

However, you can add a few mods, strip out some weight on race day and surprise him or at least make it close. There are a lot of 4th gens with some mods that are in the mid 14s. Other than freak Aaron, the 3rd gens aren't quite there. I have caught a lot of "quicker" cars than mine off guard at the track just with a few n/a mods and a bit of weight reduction, but 14.8 isn't really that great.

If it's true that they are trapping in the 97mph range stock like I've read, they SHOULD be in the low 14s stock if any of those guys learn how to drive worth a hoot. I suspect as more guys get them to the track this coming year that 14.3s stock won't be all that uncommon.

I've raced a couple of them. My friends at my old job have two of them. They aren't the best at low end power. But traction is still a problem for them down low. A 2.2 or 2.3 is the best you can ask for with that car on the normal Dunlop stock tires. But they do trap high as they are topping out 3rd gear and making almost peak boost near redline.

The one I raced, I had him beat easily down low, but he nugged back in the bottom of my 2nd gear and left me in the bottom of my 3rd gear (which sucks.. AT). If I were a 5spd, I would have had hung with him a little above 80mph. But they have great top end power on the highway. And no, I don't think a slightly modded VE 5spd can hang with them on the highway.

For the HP rating, you wouldn't think they are so fast. But on the redline forums, you see guys doing high 190hp at the WHEELS stock. And in the articles I've read, they said that Saturn wanted a very conservative HP rating at the flywheel.
