My CD Player Craps Out

I have a 1995 SE with a stock Bose system. The FM stereo functions fine, but the CD is flakey.
> I put a CD in and it works fine, hit a bump and ERR comes up and the music stops.
> I go forward a track everything is fine, I do it again and ERR.
> I forward manually instead of skipping tracks and instead of going forward a bit at a time, it goes forward, skips backward, goes forward then ERR.
The thing acts like the optical reader is dirty, but I ran a cleaner in it an no improvement. When it work it sounds as good as new, but it craps out usually befor the end of the CD.
Any suggestions, and has anyone else experienced this?
