Changing gauge cluster

I have a 1995 GXE and a friend wants to sell me gauges from a 1997 SE. Will everything work ok and would I be able to changes the miles to what I have?

I know you can't change the miles legally and I think they (instrument clusters) are set up to be tamper proof. Now having not seen the cluster from a 95 GXE I would guess based on what I can remember from this site that they probably are not inter-changeable. But you can always plug it up and see. (You said he was a friend) right?

Yeah. I thought they were but maybe not. Do you know why they wouldn't be?

i read a thread not to long ago about a guy who changed his instrument panel and calculated exactly how much time he had to run a certain current to a certain wire to make the digital odometer advance to the right reading. it wasnt that old maybe just look for it i recall it was very involved.

I tried to find something in the threads but I haven't had much luck when I look for something specific. My best guess would be because they are different model Max's (GXE vs SE). I may be wrong but the best way to find out would be to take it out and visually inspect the connections. As for the mileage, I know for a fact you shouldn't be messing with that, federal regulations and all. I think you have to register it as having a corrected odometer once you do this kind of swap.

If it an anolog cluster, it should just plug and play, only thing is the mileage is gona be that of the car it was taken off prior. Just make a record of it, for your own info. If it is a digital cluster out of a 97, you can still use it...BUT it requires some modification, look around and im sure you can find more information on this. With the digital clusters, i believe there was a very simple way to reset the odo back to "0" miles before you put it on the car.

There was the guy that put the 98/99 digital cluster in his 95-97, which required a lot of switching around wires, but seems like a 97 should just plug into a 95. I think when that guy did the swap he hooked up a function generator, IIRC, and ran the odo till it was at the same mileage as the old one. If you did that I wouldn't bother to reregister it, even though it’s illegal.

Why are you putting in a new one? Does the new one have white gauge faces, or is your not functioning?

Well the gxe as you know has black gauges. Right now I have indglow gauges on it but the speedo and rpm keep sticking because over time the glue I used to stick to the other gauges is wearing off do to weather changes. I wanted to try something new. I have a nice see of gauges to put in but I am not sure of hard it would be to install them. I have never seen anyone with them either. The 97 cluster is not digital so I hope it would work. I wanted to changed the miles to what I have but I am not sure if that is possible.

it should just plug and play, as far as the miles on the odo, i think your $hit outa luck unless you wana tamper with it. Just document it, so at least you know the real mileage...
