Trans fluid question

I bought my car from my brother bone stock (thank god he trashed those mudflaps) 3yrs ago. Had 127k when he got it. 141k when I bought it.... Now has 169,***k and is driven every day. As far as i know he never changed the fluid and neither have I. It does not smell funny, and is only a little brown so is it ok to let it go? I don't know anyone who changes there fluid every 30k... I've been told not to worry unless it's acting up or something... Also have been told that people get problems after having there fluid changed... Anyway how often does everyone else change thier fluid/filter??

My dad had a 97 toyota corolla bought brand new and sold with 140k plus and NEVER changed the trans fluid...........only oil every 5k with no problems whatsoever.. I change my oil every 4-5k so she's not neglected

I changed mine after 90,000 miles with Castrol ATF. You just have to clean the screen. They don't have a filter they have a screen. I just cleaned mine with brake cleaner.

Drop the pan, clean the magnets and the screen.
Put new ATF in and enjoy the ride for many more miles.

Brown is no good, it should be bright red.

There is an advantage to changing every 30k. When using this service interval you can just drain and fill the trans, rather than drop the pan. There is a drain plug in the pan, remove, reinstall with new crush washer and refill the trans.... very easy, fast and cheap.

I have a 5-spd and I change my trans fluid and coolant every 30k miles. I also do my fuel filter every 30k miles. It is the recommended interval and fluid is much cheaper than drive-train components.
