Lug nut stub stripped or something

So i go to rotate my tires today and i found out that one of my front lug nut stud and the lug nut itself are stripped. At first i thought they just cross threaded the nut, so i got another nut and tried to put it in. And it just wouldn't get on. So i'm thinking they cross-threaded my stud instead.

I have an idea of who did it, i rotated my tires last summer and everything was good. I got my tires put on in the fall and nothing else was done reguarding the lugs. And today i found out that its stripped.

Both the lug and the stud. I can problay get another nut easily but what can i do about my stud. I'm bothered because now that i know something is wrong i'm thinking 4 lugs isn't going to hold the tire and its on my front side.

Are they options to repair it or would i need something like a new hub?

You can press the stripped stud out and get a new one. Check your local parts store they are cheap.

Shouldn't cost more than $30 if you find an honest mech.

you'll be fine on 4 lugs. just get it fixed when you get a chance.

i'll rather not drive on 4 lugs knowly. its in the front driver side. So it would be a little more important to get that done with.

Can i rethread them, the stud mainly. I'm just going to dealership to buy a new lug or how ever they sell them.

It's ok to drive on 4 lugs, buy the stud and lugnut at Autozone or something for like $5 and take it to a shop like Brakemasters for around $30 for labor.

As long as the other lugs are torqued on properly you'll be fine with 4 lugs.

A replacement stud should cost ~$3 at the dealership. Replacement is very easy, assuming your willing, it goes as follow:

*Loosen lugs dont remove
*Jack up car, secure of jack stands
*Remove studs and remove wheel.
*Take off caliper bolt x2 - (14mm)
*Remove and hang securely caliper
*remove brake pads
*Unbolt Torque member bolts x2 - (19mm)
*Remove TM, and remove rotor (should slide right off).
*Put the car in neurtal. Rotate the bad wheel bearing so that is in the middle of the open part of the rotor splash shield
*Using a large metal hammer, bang with much force on the stud till it comes out.
*put new stud in, and using 7/16th washers (about 7 of them) put them on the stud (where the lug nut would go)
*Put the lug on, and tightned till it seats the new stud in place.
*Remove lug nut
*remove washers
*reverse install.

This may seem overwheelming or a lot but I just listed every single step taken. This should take about 15 - 25mins tops to do.

17mm / 19mm one of those two. I've always had those out when workin on my car lately so it could have it twisted and its 17mm.

that sounds very easy enough. Minus the hammering part, cause i know it will be a pain to get out.

I actually wanted to see if i can use a tap and die set to try and rethread that first. Since its a little more easier to try then to hammering.

True, but i have a thing against hammering things. ONLY a last resort.

I torqued my other 4 lug nuts to 80ft-lbs. I was unsure of the spec of them, so i guess and when with 80.

If anything i'll just do the brakes on my car as well seeing as how i have everything dissassembled to take care of this.

I was joking about the hammering, its pretty nerve wrecking actually.

~75 ft/lb. for lugs.

lol, that was my situation for almost 2 years....I noticed a long time ago my dad was driving on 4 studs, and told him, but he didnt do anything about it. I figured it wasnt a problem... Then when i got my brakes done, they stripped a stud, and cross threaded another... Needless to say riding on 3 studs sucked.. So i get to Discount, they spend 15 minutes trying to impact the cross threaded one off....It was probably the funniest thing ive seen in a garage.... Either way, Its not a huge labor charge, but it would be more fun to do yourself...

Just take a hammer and tap out the bad stud and tap in a new one. Then take a lug nut and pull it into place. It is really easy. I have done it in 10 min.

i already knew how to do brakes. Do brakes on 1 car you can do almost all the others. Only thing is the hammering and re-hammering that i haven't done to a stud yet.

Normally to pull out a stud i just used an impact and 2 bolts. back to back and pull a stud out, same for getting it back in. I'm thinking it would work in this case as well.

It takes one hit from a hammer to knock the old lug stud out...
