hey guys i changed my oil today with some 5W30 castrol gtx high mileage and a pureone purolator oil filter. ive been checking for leakage under the car and i see some oil spots on the ground after i turn off the engine. i got the right filter for the vg30e. i tightened it until it won't go anymore with only using my hand. is it not on tight enough? and when i took off the old filter it splashed on some parts under the oil filter before going into the oil pan. could it be just the old oil still dripping from the parts underneath the oil filter? hope i made this clear.(sorry if it isn't)

 

park the car, and see EXACTLY where its coming from......maybe a front main seal???

 

tomorrow park it in a different place and see if it still leaves marks, if it does you have a leak, if not then all the oil that was splashed has probably come off.

 

i know ur only suppose to tighten the oil filter with ur hand and thats what i did, but i tightened a TINY bit more with an oil wrench thingy. i didnt tighten it too much so maybe i coudnt tighten it more with my hand cuz its slippery.

 

a piece of cardboard usually helps with finding leaks

 

I would guess that if you spilled oil on part of your engine bay from the filter, it might take a little while to all drip off.

Was it leaking before you changed the oil? If not, I doubt all of the sudden you had a front or rear seal go out. It is most likely the filter isn't seated well or the drain plug.

Take a rag and wipe off the area around the filter and drain plug really well, then check the next day to see if there is any seepage around those.

If it seems like it is leaking from somewhere else, like ozzombie suggested, I would just put a big piece of cardboard under your car to see how much is leaking and from where.

 

did you use a thinner oil than what u had last in the motor??? if so, it may be coming out of a seal....... just a VERY small leak.. try the cardboard thing man....

 

nope ive been using 5W30 ever since i got the car from my uncle. im not really sure where the leak is coming from. i checked the oil filter and drain plug no leaks there. maybe its the castrol gtx high mileage stuff that made it leak. i shouldve just stayed with regular castrol gtx.....i dunno.

 

im leaking tranny fluid where the shift linkage boot is on the tranny.
what could be teh casue of this, is it fixable. is there a seal or something in there.

 

It is called the striking rod seal...I would get it from the dealership to ensure you are are getting the correct part...The dealer is pretty resonable when it comes to seals for our cars,probably under $20....

 

but isnt that seal a little under an inch in diameter??? and $20 freaking ???? ha ha

I bet the oil got in the plastic splash guards and was dripping out slowly.
I've never had it happen on my max,but my lexus does this everytime.

 

I would use 10w. I think your engine is a bit too worn to be hangin out in 5w. Unless you rebuilt it, thats a different story.

 

I have 247xxx and still use 5w-30 with out any problems

 

Yeah, I know.. Alot of people told me that already. I do have a text book from my tech school that does say to go a bit higher on worn engines, so I may as well go with that advice. It kinda makes sense actually.

 

Yeah I can understand the logic behind that but I think it would all come down to how the engine has been maintained but then you would have to elvaluate that on an engine by engine basis.
