car has about 38K its an 02, so i figured its time to change the fluid. Ran some redline MT-90. drained the old, looked clean and not much in the way of shavings. put in just about 3qts, seems most cars only take 2.5, mine took almost all 3 figure 6 oz left in the bottle. impressions, eh. feels kinda the same, although the 3rd gear "notchiness" is gone, and the shifts seem a little bit smoother. worth it i guess. anyone run mt-90 and change to something different that feels better?

 

I bought my 02 SE 6spd w/80k. I changed the fluid to a mix of Redline MT-90 and MTL which is the lighter weight fluid. I ran this mix in my WRX and it made a HUGE difference in that car. I noticed a small bu significant improvement in the Maxima. If you do not get the shifitng that you want, I would recommend trying this approach.

 

mt-90 rules. i love it. feels way better

 

i just did this on saturday. not much difference, but it "seems" a little smoother. i think this is a more noticeable on higher milage cars, with dirty tranny fluid.

 

its more noticable when its cold

 

this stuff works great....smooth as butter and definitely better than oem fluid

 

I was going to change to Amsoil this weekend to see if it would help my 3rd gear out, but I couldn't find it local had to order it. I think the biggest difference will be felt in the morning when cold. Which is when my 3rd gear feels the worse.

 

I'll say that MT-90 in my 6MT only made shifting smoother when the car/tranny was still cold. When everything is warmed up, it is smooth, but its not significantly smoother over the OEM stuff, but the shifting "stickiness" that I used to experience when the car was cold is gone now.

Btw, did you guys just use a funnel and hose to fill the tranny? How long did that take you? It took me forever to get all the tranny fluid in, so I'm gonna use a pump next time.

 

i got about 4 feet of clear hose from hd, and stuck in on the end of cheapo 99 cent funnel. the hose was perfect diameter and fit into the tranny hole like they were meant for each other. i think the id of the hose was 5/8". it probably took me 10 mins to fill the tranny with fluid.

 

i had a pump but the angle was a PITA, cheap funnel, cheap hose FTW!

 

I'll be changing over to Redline MT-90 in my new (to me anyway) '02 6-speed next weekend. Damn I love this car! 4 months of waiting was worth it.

 

Yeah, I did the same, but was too lazy to get a bigger hose. The ID of the hose I used was significantly smaller than 5/8".

 

puppetmaster, I used a funnel and hose and that **** took forever to go in....

 

I dumped the MT-90 about ten days ago. I don't have definitive proof, but my 5 speed tranny developed a leak and I blame the MT-90. MT-90 felt really good with temps below freezing, but as it warmed up, it went through a nasty viscosity transition where the synchros just don't rev fast enough.

Because of this transition, I decided to put a mix of 3.75 qts. of Amsoil MTG to 1 qt. of dino 80w90 GL-4. It's not perfeft, but IMO it's better than MT-90. I do hope it does behave better than RL as this mix warms up from deep freezes.

 

where is it leaking from? did you tighten down the drain and fill tight enough? just an idea.. is the new mix leaking?>

 

It's neither the drain or fill plugs. It's leaking somewhere around the bellhousing. I haven't taken the time to put some degreaser on the area and clean it up to try to figure it out.

 

different oil will not cause a leak.

 

has anyone had the problem were u can't go into 6th gear?? I forced it in a couple of times and i couldnt get it into anyother gear after that, i have to f@#k wit da shifter till its starts grabbing gears again... and then sometime when i try 6th it works like a charm.... wtf could that be my 6th gear itself or is dat my syncros///??

 

after4 days of driving, there really is not much of a diff. 3rd gear is better, thats about all. worth it, only unless you need to change the fluid like i did...
