The only time my Max burned a lot of gas was when my CEL came on and I had two O2 sensor codes. I had them replaced and a ECU reprogram and it went back to normal.

my max burns alot of gas, if i get 200 miles per gas tank with 89 octane gas, i would be so happy.....
i did have my o2 sensor die on me, but i replaced it,
but i didnt reprogram ECU, was i supossed to do that, and how do you do that?
my SES light is not on anymore....
and i do have ebay cai, I'll be getting rid of it really soon, and buying berk intake....
is it my MAF filter? or is it something else? any info would be helpful...

I used to have a Supercharged '95 Mustang (yeah, I know . . . ) that had a bad vacuum leak after the MAF sensor. Until I found the leak, i was getting 9 MPG! You may want to check all your vacuum lines and intake couplings to see if this may be your problem. Just a thought . . .

stop drivin on belmont and take her on the highway

check yur plugs, air filter, maf, also your drivin distance affect the gas mileage
i get about 24mpg on my max, about 320 miles before empty light up

Gas mileage on the max isn't that great. City driving and the max eats gas, but highway mileage is pretty good though. I get about 19 mpg with combo of city and highway driving to and from work.

- Stay off the gas.

You should be getting around 17 - 25 in combined driving.

I get about 27 on the highway.

6 speed.

yeah, iam really happy with max mileage on highway....
i went to st.louis this weekend, (thats why i didnt install my struts lol) but, stlouis is around 350 miles from me, and i filled up my car before i left, and i made it to st.louis, and i had some gas left to drive around st.louis....
i was really happy with her....
if i 5spd iam sure that i would be able to do 400 miles really easily...
but city mileage is really really bad...

Your calculations don't fly. Our cars have an 18.5 gallon tank. If you're getting 160 on a full tank, your gas mileage is 8.64 miles per gallon. YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.

I get 340 miles per tank every tank. Rarely does it fluctuate and I do drive fast.

I'd also have the OBDII codes read. Your knock sensor could have failed which doesn't turn on the SES light but causes it to run full retard on the timing.

Great Gas Mileage

I'm running 12" wheels and they spin the hell out of the odometer.

Actually, I'm on 18's with a 245/40/18 so the diameter is almost the same as stock. The driving is a combo of city and highway, about 50/50.

Modifications include:

Stock airbox w/K&N drop-in, silencer removed and 3" heating duct to the bottom of the car. You can see it on my homepage.

HKS Rear Section. This does not include the B-pipe, which is stock along with the rest of the exhaust.

Hypergrounding kit with voltage regulator and an Optima Yellow Top

Oil Catch Can from Sears.

I run 91 with a splash of 100 octane once in a while. All other times it's just the 91.

I think that my high mpg comes from the fact that I use mobil 1 0-20 or 5-20. I used to run the 10-30 from mobil 1 and everytime I did an oil change, I poured out about 3 to 3.5 quarts of oil. I now pour out 4+ quarts everytime and I even have a catch can that catches oil which I throw away. Talk about burning no oil. The car runs great.

When I do a highway only run, like coming back from Vegas I can register 425 on the odometer in a single tank.

I got 150 miles on the halfway mark that's with cold starts, fast acceleration and braking (making shifts at at least 4000rpm). There must be something dead wrong with your's if you're getting that much for a whole tank.

Theres something wrong with your calculations. The max holds 18gallons of gas. If you are getting 16.4mpg, you should be getting almost 300miles per tank.

$50 for the diagnostic test? It should be free. Your car is under warranty and you should not have to pay a penny for anything related to the engine or drivetrain.

Things happen, I wouldn't be too worried about it. Is your odometer accurate? Maybe you should do an odometer check. It's real easy just use the mile markers on the freeway.

Edward Lee - do you get 340 miles ALL CITY? That sounds kinda fishy...maybe its the 0w-20 oil...that is a REAL thin...dunno if its safe to run in the max at all...

Shift_2kmax - When I went to Salinas, I was only able to get 25.5mpg...all cruising at 75mph on the interstate...I was pretty disappointed....I was shooting for like 27+mpg cuz I'm fully bolted on...and bolt ons are suppose to make the car run more efficently....that kinda blows....maybe if you want to get good mpg, u have to cruise 70mph or lower...wacked

Oh yeah, a 5spd manual is worse than a 4spd auto for highway cruising....the 4th gear on the 4spd revs lower than the 5th gear on the 5spd....automatics get better mpg than 5spds....its different in the city...

Oh by the way...I get consistent 16mpg all city driving with VERY short trips...it freakin blows...I'm barely hittin 250 miles before I have to fill up...and when I fill up..its usually 15-16 gallons worth....

yeah that blows....
but i thought that 5spd would be better for highway...
because well, iam having some problems with the "ground" wire on my torque converter or tranny idk what it is, so i have to fix that....
but on highway i was hitting 2.7k rpm all the time...
speed limit in Indiana is 70mph, so going 80 is not bad, and i was going around 80 all the time, but Illinois was 65, so i had to go around 75ish.....
but hey, we all wanted 6cyl 3.0 liter car, and thats what we get for it.....
i would rather pay a lil bit more and drive maxima instead of civic lol...
i like my maxima, and it dont matter how much gas it takes to have it to run, i'll fill her up all the time
thanks guys

a 5spd maxima at 80mph revs at 3300....your lucky at only 2700 in the autotragic...

but my 6spd revs at 2400 at 75mph...and it still only mustered out 25.5mpg all highway...wtf? I wonder what a 3.0 would get if it stayed at 2400 the whole way

At 75mph, I run at 2500rpm, 12 hour drive to location I was going, I got around 440 miles...one time I pulled 34mpg highway out of my ***, for some reason I can't get that high anymore.

Probably is the oil. Is it safe to run? Who knows. I tell you in a couple of years. I know one thing. The car burns no oil. 4.5 in and almost 4.5 out. I even have a oil catch can.

FYI, I think that your tank is 18.5 gallons not 15.5.

The countdown trip meter stops displaying miles and starts flashing after you get under 25 or so. I don't know how yours could have said 10...

I've been getting 350-400 miles before my gas light comes on 50/50 city/hwy. This has been on winter gas, too. The light comes on with about 2 gallons in the reserve.

I just took my first highway trip in my '02 6-speed last night. In total I went 107 miles and I used 3.5 gallons of gas. Pretty much right at 30mpg. The amazing thing is that this included at least 15 miles of city driving! My highway speed was right at about 70mph most of the time. I was also driving up and down a lot of hills.

I haven't had the car long enough to get a full city mpg calculation, but according to the computer, I'm averaging around 24. This HAS to be off. I'd be in heaven if I could get 24mpg city and still have this wonderfully powerful 3.5!

it starts flashing at 25 DTE...but that doesn't mean it will stop counting for u... ...and I kept pushing it until I had like 10-15 DTE...real real low

If I did 50/50 city hwy...I would prob barely barely break 300 miles till I have to fill up...I dunno how you guys are busting these mpg....anykind of city driving absolutely kills the gas mileage for the max....especially if u mix in 50% of it into your highway....

I think i can back that up. i dont have a fifth gen YET but I have a '96 ranger 3.0v6 2wd truck wit a 20 gallon tank. i usually get between 300 and 320 out of a tank and have even seen 400+ with lots of highway drivin so you have a problem

You are right the 3.5 arent great on gas at all (of course you can't help but have a heavy foot with it ). Time my gas hand on my Max and G35 gets to 3/4 full it drops from that point goes down to E quickly.

Yea, I was all excited when I got 30mpg on that first highway trip. My first city mpg came back with 19 though. I blame the Devil for forcing my right foot down.
