Cylinder Heads

If I go to the junk yard and pull heads off of another motor and the timing belt has not snapped would it be ok to put the heads on my block without having them worked?

Also how can I make sure that the knocking that I'm hearing is coming from the top end (valve) or the bottom end (rod)?

You could in theory grab a set of heads off a junkyard engine and bolt them on, but if you've got knocking noise inside your engine and the belt has snapped, it's more in your best interest to just swap the entire engine. put a new timing belt and water pump on it before you install it and the job is 1000000 easier. should cost you under $600 to swap it yourself with a new belt and water pump.

My belt did not snap I just got the knocking after gapping my plugs and the only thing that I messed with what the plugs and now I have knock. I'm just trying to see how I can tell if it is on the head or the block? And the size of the 6 point?

There's no guarantee that the heads you pull off are in good shape. It's would be ill-advised to assume that. UNLESS the engine it came off of is of superior condition and not exhibiting signs of being suspect

Right so just by seeing that the t-belt is ok is not really enough.

So does anyone know what size the 6-point is to take the heads off?

it's probably the same as the plenum ones close to a 1/4" whatever that is in mm. might just want to pick up a set of hex bits. fsm does a lousy job of noting bolt sizes.

Well I lucked out and I think that I got the steal of a life time. I went to the junkyard to pull the heads off of the only Max that they had with the motor in and I stripped one of the head bolt and was not able to get the rear head off of the car. So I go back up to the front to let them know that I was not able to get it off and was going to head back to the house to cry and the guy says I have a one of those motors sitting over here come and see if you can get your parts off of it. I went over to look at it and it is the complete motor and all of the accessories and it looks better then any of the VG30E motors that I have seen in the Maxima's (including mine) in my area junked or not. I ask the guy how much for the WHOLE motor..... $250.00 and I will help you load it he says and I know it runs as I'm the one that pulled it out of the wrecked car it came from. I'll take it I said and now it sits at my house waiting to be installed...

that's a decent deal. you'll probably want to replace at least the timing belt before installation.

All depends on what part of the country your in...Here in TN. junkyard engines tend to be cheaper then other parts of the country...

For example, there is a yard a few miles from me with a ve motor with 114,000 on it for $400..

Ill give you one for $150. Put new injectors on it and your good. Ran fine other wise, even with 217K. I just have 2 extra VGs so I dont care what I get outta it.

I have done a lot of things since my last post here. I put the new motor on a stand I have done the following so far. I replaced the crank and cam seals, the real main seal, I pulled the oil pan and replaced the 2 seals at the front and the back and resealed it, pulled of the exhaust manifolds.

I will have to drill out 2 exhaust studs. I will be taking my brand new fuel injectors, water pump, t-stat, and exhaust manifold studs, and timing belt as they were all just replaced less then a month ago and putting it on the new motor.

I have pulled the valve covers off and the heads look great. When I pulled the oil pan off there was no sludge. I can't wait to put it all back together this weekend. I went out and bought a hoist and I will be pulling the motor out tomorrow night, and will put the new motor in on Saturday after moving all of the stuff over from the bad motor.

My next step will then be to put my old motor on the engine stand and tear it down to the block and find the rod or bearing that is making the knocking noise and make sure that it did not cause any damage. At that point I will start building it up to take the turbo that I want to put in it. Needless to say this is going to be a long process but atleast I will have a good motor under the hood while I build up the old one.

Sorry for rambling on I'm just excited...

Well my original plan was to go and pull the heads off of a motor at the junk yard. I had gotten to were I was removing the head bolts and I got the front head off and out of the car but then stripped one of the rear bolts so that ruined that plan as I did not have a way to get the bolt out. I have pulled the upper intake off several times and have no problem with getting it off now. Were you able to get that bolt out?
