If you get the axles replaced at a shop, you are gonna pay basically $300-$450. New as opposed to remanufactured will obviously be the more expensive type.

Apparently if you know what's going on with a Maxima it isn't too bad to do yourself, but even if you pay someone it's a good repair to make.

A mechanic told me that my boots were torn and that I should get my axles replaced soon. I believe he told me about $200 a side to replace the axles, so about $400 total. However my sisters bf is willing to do them for free. Someone told me its 60 bucks an axle after core at autozone with lifetime warranty.

Which autozone did you go to? I'm local, try going to advance auto parts. They charge around $65 for each side. This includes the entire axle.

I think the book labor on an axle is 1 hour for our cars.. The axles themselves, remanufactured shouldnt be much more than 60$ each after the core charge. Don't let the shop charge you retail for em, the markup is crazy compared to if you were to just get them yourself.

When you say clicking, do you mean all the time or just when you're turning?

Both my CV joints are torn, but it sort of clicks on the drivers side, but that's it. I am wondering how long I can push it.

clicking means the CV boot has been torn for a while. get it done as soon as you possibly can. (this isnt a OMG FIRST THING TOMOROW MORNING) but, id try to do it within a month. if not it could get dangerous.

my CV boots both blew about 9 months ago, no clicking yet...

napa has our axels rebuilt for about $45-55 each.

be sure to get ones for ABS if you have it. (i do on my 95 gle)

now i just need someone to help me do mine.. cuz shops here quoted me $600 and $650.... i can barely afford the $120 to buy the axels

$600?! Didnt someone just say its 1 hour book time for the axles? I believe a mechanic told me 2 hours an axle. Even so how much can your mechanic charge an hour?! Most shops charge $75 an hour for labor. Even if your paying for 4 hours that is only 300 bucks for labor MAX. Now get the axles yourself and your at about 450 bucks total for parts and labor. I dont know what shop is charging you 600 bucks. Even so everyone that knows anything about cars tells me axles are easy to change. You should definatly find someone that knows how to replace them for you, as 400 bucks to replace axles is a total rip off.

DIY Not that hard

Got my CV joints at raxles.com - perfect fit and decent price. It's way easier to just pull the entire shaft out and replace the whole thing. Takes about a day. My first side (pass) took about 3 hours, other side about an hour. Really - no kidding! You will need a torque wrench rated up to 300 ft/lbs (sears-bout 50 bucks) to re-tighten spindle nut. Go to http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/401 to get an idea how things come apart and go back together. Honestly toughest part was getting the new one to line up splines and "snap" into tranny. This was on a 97 max auto trans. e-mail if you need more info.

Good Luck

to the group but not working on cars!

It is not one hour. Usually the "book" price includes an estimate for a repair that goes exactly how it should, and a price of "oh sh^t, everything is rusted and the axle is seized." I think that estimate is somewhere closer to 2-3 hours at least.

A tq wrench is always good to have around but you can spend $8 on a two foot breaker bar at harbor freight. Welcome to the .org BTW.
