so I was walking to my car today and noticed that the plates were shinier than normal. much to my suprise my license plate stickers were stolen (and yes I cut them). So after buying new stickers and cutting the crap out of them even more I also want to get covers. Any ideas, or suggestions for where I can find some that won't yellow in the sun, possibly tinted?

 

a little OT, but what do you mean you cut them?

 

I mean taking a razor blade and cutting the stickers to prevent the ease of the steal. Unfortunately when I went out there I could see the score marks on the plate where the stickers had been

Yes like that but does it fade? I was just wondering if any of the org members use these plate covers If so, which they recommend and which to avoid.

 

You might want to check your local laws as some license plate covers are illegal (yes, even the clear ones can be illegal).

 

If they want it they will get it. The plate is a start. Invest in some Tamper-resistant Torx screws and bit. You can get them at a hardware store, and are only a little more than regular screws. I got mine from NAPA.

 

at less than $10 a pop, i suppose you could justify getting a new one each year or so to avoid it getting colored or something. i see what you mean by scoring the tags. so it won't all come off in one piece.

like Radiohead said, see if it's legal. you aren't supposed to have anything obstructing your plate. you can't even have them on your dash because the windshield is in front of it.

 

I agree. You can pick them up for less than $10 at any auto parts store and replace them as they get worn.

That is why some states - EG Texas - have changed the stickers to be inside the front screen.

Yea, usually cops won't really pay much attention to it, but it is a citeable infraction. Most of the time unless you're doing something stupid or speeding or whatever, they won't care; I drove around MD for two or three months without a front plate on, but the first time my trans decided to chirp into second at low speed/throttle with a cop nearby, I got a written warning for it.

Those tinted ones that are used to lower visibility of the plate(s), or the ones that light up when a camera takes a pic of it are the ones you want to avoid, seeing as how cops don't much like not being able to see your plate (for their safety). Get a straight up clear one and the tamper proof torx screws and you should be alright.
