Alright, well I spent all afternoon putting new rotors and pads on the rear of my 97 SE. I began the day by stopping over at Advance Auto to buy one of those tools to retract the caliber. I bought the tool, went to my house, and began to break down the passenger side rear. Wheel, caliper, and caliper mount all came off with no problem. I used the two M8 bolts that I bought, and popped the rotor off in about 30 seconds. At this point, I am thinking to myself, hey this is going to be an easy day. Well, when it came time to retract the caliper, it all went down hill. Make a long story short, I had to completely take the caliper off, put it in a vice, and stand on a chair while turning the caliper cylinder to get it to go in. Ok, so after about 2 hours, I finally had the passenger side done. I go over to the driver side....Everything comes off again, no problem. I go to re assemble the brakes, and for some reason the pad would not sit properly in the caliper housing. I tapped it a couple of times with a rubber hammer and it went in. Well, I drove the car home, and my rotor was giving off so much heat, I could have fried an egg on it. This isn't the normal heat that you get when you use your brakes...I mean hot to the point where I could see the rotor turning colors. I am guessing that the caliber didn't retract far enough, or one of my pads is dragging on the rotor? Anyone have any experience with something like that?

 

Save your pads and rotors, get some "new" calipers from autozone. Should be around $120 after exchanges for both. Had to do the same thing with my 98 after 130,000 miles.

 

yeah also on the back of the brake pad it has 2 little nipples did you make sure they fit into the recieving holes on the caliper piston itself they have too be in proper alignment or the pad will grag and heat the rotors red and orange hot

 

i changed all my brakes a few weeks ago. Both my rear calipers were siezed up. I had same experience as u. Just go get some remanufacture calipers and u r good to go.

 

do the reman calipers cost?

I CHANGED MY BACK BRAKES ON SATURDAY.......DROVE IT RIGHT AFTER ..GOT THAT SAME SMELL....AND HEAT....BUT IT STOPPED AFTER A WHILE...ITS PROBABLY CUZ UR BRAKES ARE NEW .....AND THICKER THAN THE OLD WORNED DOWN ONES U TOOK OFF....[]

 

I noticed my rear brakes going when I got on the highway to go pick up another friend's car. It made an INCREDIBLY loud resonating booming deep squeal noise, I figured it was a wheel bearing, but when I yanked on the e-brake (which doesnt stop my car BTW), the noise went away. Today, I was parked, and had the e-brake pulled, Forgot it was pulled, put it into drive, and IDLE in drive got the car moving.....120 for reman calipers sounds good to me. Honestly I'm sick of having to deal with every little problem with the rears.

 

Once you buy new ones you can replace them every time. They have a lifetime waranty.
