For guys with auto 4th gens
For the last month, I can't stop not hitting 5-6k rpms on an open road, do any of you guys blow your engine/transmission, or screw up your car by doing this too much? Also how bad is it really? My mechanic said its extremely bad, but its impossible to get fast acceleration, and the engine screaming without hitting 6k, plus it feels so damn good, do you guys suggest taking it easy, maybe only 4k rpms? Wouldn't feel the same, I just don't want to blow the engine right now, its 151k 97 maxima, oil changed every 3k what you guys think, and do you guys do what I do?

yeah i baby my car these days, ....mainly cuz i can hardly afford school right now, much less repairs, i just ordered a new knock sensor only because im getting 20mpg......instead of 24-25 like i used to get
I beat mine everyday.... I drove like a granny for a few weeks to save gas. My net was less than 2mpg, after that I went back to normal driving. I would love to swap a 5spd, however my auto has a cooler and proper service I sure it will last forever..lol
If I blow the transmission its going to have to sit for a month at least before I can get the money, oh and I work really close to home around 4 miles, and still use so much gas. Recently got her tuned up, and she does around 5.5k rpms on like 80% throttle, the fuel filter was really bad, and the new spark plugs make it feel faster. Thanks for your responses guys, I'll try not to get trigger happy when I get behind the wheel now.

A little off topic, and I may have missed this elsewhere, but is AMSoil synthetic auto tranny fluid a good choice? I've read the TSB and manual and, of course "only Nissan D matic fluid" is ever to come close to this vehicle. So whats the story, anyone, anyone, ......Bueller....

the only time my pedal isnt floored is when I hit 10mph over the speed limit on the highway or 5 in the city. been driving it this way for 11 years now. all original motor and tranny.. course it has only 36K miles. ok 42k if you count the time my odometer had taken a dump/

There's no reason why you should go over 3k rpm in city driving. I get plenty of acceleration shifting under 3k rpm. I'm sure the engine/tranny can handle the higher reving...

You said that you were consistently hitting 5-6K, BUT you never said in what gear you were doing this, nor if you were going at WOT (wide open throttle). It is really easy (and typical) to hit 5-6K before going from 1st to 2nd gear at WOT. NOW, if you are talking about going from 2nd gear to 3rd gear at WOT, 5-6K is a little bit harder to do than 1st to 2nd, but still within normal limits. Going from 3rd to 4th, you would normally switch at 3,500 to 4,000 on moderate acceleration.
Now, if you are hitting 6K going from 3rd to 4th, then you will be hitting your maximum speed of around 123MPH if your tranny is operating normally. If you are nowhere near that speed, then, Houston, you have a problem.
High mileage automatics tend to stick in their gears, and you can reduce or eliminate the sticking by using synthetic ATF and/or putting in an additive like Lucas or Prolong. If you have never had a full auto tranny service done to your car, I also recommend getting one done.
If the tranny service and/or change in fluids does not cure the sticking, then you need to change how you modulate your gas pedal; i.e., taking your foot off and quickly put it back on causes the gears to shift. You also should keep it right below WOT.
If your tranny continues to hit 5-6k, even on moderate acceleration, then it may need a shift kit.
