Clutch Problem... I think. HELP ME PLEASE

I just got in my car to go get a car wash and go see some fireworks with my gf. I put my foot on the clutch, it goes almost all the way to the floor before I get any resistance. This happened yesterday morning, but it warmed up and was fine. I let it warm up for fifteen mins. but it didnt get any better. Now its not going into gear either. I finally got it in reverse, I let out the clutch just a lil bit and it jumped like I was trying to launch or something. I tried to go in first and let out the clutch maybe 3 inches from the floor and it stalled. What is the problem??? I don't think its the clutch since it didnt feel like it was slipping before this. It just broke overnight somehow. I just hit 100K the other day unfortunately. The only thing I can think of is a slave cylinder. My gf is telling me its clutch fluid. haha. thanks for the help guys. It might be something small or big.

Please help me. what a great way to start off a holiday.

Hey Jae whatsup. I don't really know where the clutch fluid is to be honest. I have the Haynes manual and it said it is by the brake fluid, but I couldn't find it. Its kinda embarrasing.

It's either your clutch fluid level is low or you have a hydraulic leak in the system. Check the master cylinder and slave for signs of leakage. If you don't know where these are located, get yourself a Haynes or Chiltons, its one of the best investments you will ever make for your aging Maxima.

yup. What Dennis said. This exact problem happened to me a few months ago. It started out of nowhere and within a week my max was dead weight. Same symptoms dhaney is having...at the time I thought the clutch fluid level was low so I checked and it was topped off. btw clutch fluid reservoir is located near the brake fluid reservoir/booster near the corner of engine bay. Anyways, it turns out I wasn't getting adequate hydraulic pressure to actuate the clutch. I had a leak in the hose connecting the slave cyl to the master cyl. How this leak occured almost overnight is a mystery to me. I was just glad it was a cheap fix and didn't require a new clutch!

So if you're clutch wasn't slipping before and this happened all of a sudden it's probably a hydraulic leak somewhere. Best of luck to you. Let us know how it goes.

AAAAh. Im saved. I definately didnt have the money to fix anything. I couldn't see the clutch fluid res. because my shocks on the hood are broken, so I'm trying to keep the hood open with one hand, and check around without a flashlight. One mechanic I called just told me to check the fluid. Like what everyone else has been tellin me. So i go out with a flashlight, prop the hood open with a paint can underneath the car and a wood fence post, I look and see it in a second. Its completely drained. Im gonna go get fluid now. Thanks all for the help.

fill it, close it, and sit there and pump the clutch vigourously till it feels normal.

good luck!

you probably have a bad hose that connects to the slave cylinder ... get a stainless steel one for baout 25 bux. It's a common issue with the 5-spds.

Bleeding would be a good idea too. Do the slave first, on the tranny, then the master at the strut tower.

Ok. So I added fluid. I pumped it for a long *** time. It felt a little better. It goes into gear now. I can drive it. But the clutch still goes towards the floor without any resistance. I mean, its better. I pump the clutch and it starts to feel good, then i turn the car off, and it goes back to ****. Maxline GTR that would be awesome if you could help me out. I think I need to bleed some stuff. Let me know what day works for you. Im moving to Glendale on Saturday. So, we could meet in Glendale, or Thousand Oaks. Its up to you, thatd be cool though. thanks. I don't think I can bleed anything myself cuz I suck on working with my car. This **** is stressing me out. ughhhhhhhh! Oh yeah, and I tried to install my fuel filter, couldn't do that either.

dhaney, since you added fluid and the clutch still does seem to have any hydraulic pressure. Sounds like there might be a small leak somewhere or air is entering the system. Just because the clutch isn't bled doesn't mean it is the actual cause of clutch failure. If all else in the system is ok, the clutch should still work...it might feel spongy or sloppy but it should still function with the car off or on.

buck up, soldier...at least you had the cajones to attempt the fuel filter install...those banjo bolts are tricky. You tried and that's all that matters. I have a whole bottle of synthetic clutch fluid that I barely used. I bought it when I had the same problem only I was not out of fluid which is why I have so much left over....it's yours if you want it just let me know.

. ...thanks

Tsukuba Curcuit. Thanks for the offer and the props. Its hard to try to work on stuff when you dont have the tools or the knowledge, so thank you for the props. i app. it. anyway, maxlinegtr helped me out today and we bled the clutch fluid. He said there was a lot of air in the system. He fillled it back up. Its working perfect now. Thanks MaxlineGTR.
thanks all for the help
