ran codes..03 04...knock sensor..help!!!

I was driving and all of a sudden my car stuttered a little bit and then the OD light blinked a few times. No CEL, but I ran it for codes and got 03 04, which came out to a problem with the KS.

What to do now? I don't know how to check the KS, I don't know how to replace it, I don't know how much it'll cost, and I don't know how hard/easy it will be to replace it...

Help is appreciated!!

Well. It is possible that the car stuttering and OD light blinking are related to the knock sensor failure, but that is most likely not the case. You can remove your knock sensor and still have a working car. It will just be very slow and have bad gas mileage. For now, just go about replacing your knock sensor.

What to do? Replace the KS.

Don't know how to check it? There is no checking ... you have determined it is bad.

Don't know how to replace it? How to replace and test knock sensor

How much will it cost? Anywhere from $60 to $130. Ebay is the best place to check. An ebay auction of a knock sensor I think it is original ... it looks like it.

How hard to replace? Anyone who is willing to get their hands dirty can do it. Take your time. Find someone with small hands to help.

An extremely brief breakdown:
1. Locate the sensor underneath the lower intake manifold. *Refer to the how-to ... it has images.
2. Pull out the green connector because it gets in the way.
3. Unratchet the bolt that sticks through the top of the sensor.
4. Carefully pull the sensor out ... you DO NOT want to risk losing that bolt.
5. Remove the metal brace between the sensor and the connector (Looks like a tiny paper clip that was bent and broken.
6. Pull the sensor off the connector.
7. Put the new one on.
8. Reinstall

BE EXTREMELY careful with the new sensor. They will break if they are dropped or banged around.

As for the car studdering a little ... ignore it for now and wait. Make sure all your car maintanence is update (IE ... a 60K checkup)

This is actually pretty easy to replace. The stickies make it seem like the mother of all b!tches, but its not. I did it just by craming my hand under the lower plenum with a small midget wrench. Taking off the intake all the way to the TB helps also.

If it is torqued tightly, a midget wrench won't crack it. Just be careful when using your hands that you don't break any of the hose guides on the ABS/BARO PRESSURE solenoid, if yours is close to the opening of the manifold (as was mine).

Thats a lot of work for just the KS. I mean you have to remove the lower plenum which means fuel rails and injectors gotta come out also. Sticking my hand down in there took only a half hour... if even that.

The location of KS is probably one of the stupidest things on this car.

I've done it by removing it, and stuffing my hand in the valley, and it just feels better when you can torque it down correctly. MAkes me sleep at night better.
