Alumninum CAI machined for 01 MAx AE

I just have to brag about this aluminum CAI. What is so special about it? It was machined for me by my nephew, Richard, to fit my 01 AE Maxima. The outer edges were machined down so that when the rubber connectors were added, it presented a smooth flow along the entire length of the CAI. even the hose fittings were machined to fit this piece.

A look inside the CAI

CAI Installed in the Max. It is made of 6061 aluminum. Light weight compared to the Frankencar I had in there previously and much better looking too.

Not really a true CAI but that's awesome that your nephew made you that midpipe. Cool! Could I place an order?

Not a big CAI fan...but THAT is bada'ss!

Just one question..with that location, won't the intake be hurting for air mass?

CAI not found? Looks like regular intake with a sweet midpipe.

Although me and some others prefer the OEM Midpipe.

Pardon my use of the term "CAI". I really had no clue what to call this but it is an afetrmarket pipe. It's actually a refined version of the old Frankencar unit that I used to have with a little less roar on close to WOT.

The one nice about this is that the filter is off the ground and far from the rad compared to the injen unit. The car does not appear to be hurting for air. You can actually hear air being sucked when you apply a little throttle.

very nicely done. One of the best looking midpipes I've seen. How's the performance (i.e. does it have the low-end loss typical of short-ram intakes?)

BTW, Injen is not a CAI either. It sucks hot air from behind the radiator. The only TRUE CAI is the Place Racing/Cattman CAI, which is very hard to find these days, but could be machined (hint, hint)

Looks good, much like other have said that's got to be one of the best looking midpipes that's ever been posted in here. My question is the same as irish, do you loose any low-end torque? Any sound clips of WOT? And how soon are you going to be mass producing these for a group deal

No low end torque loss that I could feel. Pick up at start up seems peppier but that's probably due to the advanced timing that was done. As mentioned I used a mid pipe previous to this that was made of steel. That created a roar on WOT. This has not done that, more like a growl but more noticeable than the sound produced while using the Injen unit. This is probably due to the smooth finish of the inside wall.

As for mass producing this, we are looking for alternative aluminum material as 6061 is quite expensive up here. When we do, I will post more pics.

Quite a bit considering it was machined down manually. He is still in his apprenticeship stage and has no access to the CNC. We will talk to his boss and see how much it will cost to make 10 mid pipes using the CNC.

If we do make this, it will be for the midpipe only. we will not be able to supply the 2 hose connectors, MAF adapter plate and clamps.

My nephew appreciates all the comments. He may be making 6 pieces of the mid pipe. He just has to confirm the cost of the material and availability. Then he will figure out how much it will cost to make.

He did make the rad clamps ( the clamps mounted on the cross member holding the rad from teh top ). Pics will posted soon.
