to those who have sound deadened before, would putting heat shield (foil backed carpeting material) onto the inside of the door (metal) ruin the sound from a midbass speaker that is created inside the door?

how many layers of mat should i put on the outside door skin, the metal that has all of the holes and contours to the door panel?

would you just have to cut little pieces and apply them around the screws, or is there another way to do this?

if i'm being confusing, it's just because i've been so tired from sound deadening all day. thanks!

While Sweetsound is the king of deadening, since he hasn't replied yet I will. Putting carpet padding on the inside of the door will cut out resonance and standing waves. But it also soaks up water like a sponge, and people have had problems with that. Best bet is to put it between the door and the door panel. As far as layers go, put as many as you can. I put between 2 to 4 layers on the inside of the door, and 2 to 3 layers between the door and the panel, then followed by a layer of carpet padding. My suggestion is use smaller pieces to apply the matting as it makes it much easier to work with. I just covered around screw holes and such. Swwetsound has a ton of pics on what he did.
And I know what you mean about the time it takes. It took a day and a half for the trunk, day and a half for the doors, and one day to put carpet padding on the floor, under the back seat, and in the doors. Overall, it's tiring, but worth it. All I hear is a small rattle in the dash and middle console, and other than that, nothing but clean bass from the woofers in the door and sub in the trunk.....
What mat are you using?

here we go..

Do not! I repeat, do not! use carpet padding on the most outer part of the door. It will eventually soak moisture and fall off causing preventing windows from rolling all the way down..Happened to me as you can tell
Do use matting material with high strength adhesive on the metal to stop the resonance. Also, the metal part which is right next to the plastic door panel should be covered with a layer of sound deadening to stop it from resonating as well as seal all the holes, thus making the door into an enclosure. On top of that i used a layer of carpet padding to isolate the door panel from the metal part of the door and to keep some of the noise out as well. The plastic door panel itself weighs in at about 3 pounds stock. As you might guess, when you turn up the music it will be resonated very easily. I added numerous layers of sound deadening to that panel. After i was done it weighed about 10-12 pounds instead of 3
To deaden the door, i just applied a sheet of mat with precut holes over everything except the door lock mechanism. Then i screwed the door lock mechanism and the metal bar (sort of a handle) on top of that and the padding. You can also see more pictures of what i have done in this post.

Good luck to you and post again if you have further questions before you screw anything up.

thanks anton

you've helped me a lot through e-mails...i'm not sure if you remember who i am..but you've e-mailed me at least 8 times about sound deadening.

anyway, i've done 2 layers on the innermost part of the metal door (the metal that makes up the exterior frame) and it was hard work, especially in the front doors. I've gotten a few cuts, but that's okay .

as for the door panels, i've added 2-3 layers of mat all over it, without taking out the stiff styrofoam pieces. on top of that i added as much heat sheild as i could fit, but only one layers, since it might cause problems with fitment later on. the door panels are SUPER heavy now!

i tested the door by temporarily connecting the top portion to the metal door, and i closed it. WOW. really sounds like a luxury car door. (gives me motivation to keep on going with this torture)

anyway, tomorrow, i'm going to finish up the innermost metal part of the door, and the i'll probably start on the outside part with all of the holes.

anton, i've checked out the link that you posted on this thread. someone asked if you put carpet padding onto the outermost part of the metal door. should i also do that? it's only 1 layer correct? would there be any fitment problems, since i also have carpet padding on the door panel?

thanks

i would personally take the padding off the panel and put it on the actual door. But the way you do it is up to you.

hehe, yes actually

yup, its Chris.

Anton, i copied you door panel on your web site, and that's where i got the idea of the heat shiled on the door panel. i'm not going to remove it...but if i add another layer on the door, would it be too squished to fit??

thanks

It can't hurt to try, but it's pretty tight on my door with just one layer. BTW, the more foam is compressed, the less it absorbs sound.....

that's what i forgot to ask!

while i was sound deadening...i noticed the mechanism in which the motor of the window travels up and down. it's about 2.5 inches wide, and it's coated with a gooey/silvery kind of lubricant. does anyone know what this is?

i might apply more of that stuff so the windows can roll down a little easier. thanks

oh and another quick question...if i applied the heat shield onto the outer part of the door should the foil backing of the heat shield face outside the car or inside the car?

Apply glue to the carpet part, not the foil part. It will stick better that way. It doesnt really matter which way the foil is facing.
