#$&%@ foiled by the dealer parts guy - wrong seal

So last week I had enough of the strange front end noise coming from the left side. I got home on Thursday night and put car on jackstands and pulled the wheels. I found that the noice was most likely from shrinkage of the urethane bushings on the sway bar end links, so I tightened them up. While I was under there poking around, I found that the left axle seal was leaking like a ****. I was a little supprised as it was a new seal when I did the swap, its only got about 10K miles on it.

This morning I started looking for a new seal. I figured it would be easy to find... I ended up calling the dealer, and they supposedly had one. I got there like 5 mins before they closed and picked it up.

Now, when I got there, he handed me the seal, and it was smaller than I remembered. But, I just figured that it I was wrong and the larger seal was the inside one. I shrugged and went on my way.

I stopped at BK, grabbed a Extreme Spicey Chicken and went home. I eventually wander out to the garage and pull the hub abd axle. I stick my seal puller in there and pull the old seal out.

uh-oh. It was the 'big' seal. @$&*%#@#$*@%$*

Sooo... now the car is going to sit for the weekend. Bummer.

I hate it when they do that crap. stuff like that is why I always pull the seal and use one of my other cars to take it to the parts store.

good habit.
I usually check to see if there any numbers on the seal to x-ref from.

BTW dealers are starting to hire as stupid parts people as the rest of the industry so don't expect them to be right anymore

I remember one time back in the 70's I had to take my engine block in to Giant Auto Parts to make sure I got the right spark plugs...

Yeah, no kidding. What part of 'left' is hard to understand.

the best repsonse to that is "you mean left if you're in the car or left facing the car"

My local Nissan dealership parts MANAGER swears up and down there is no such thing as a way to rebuild the VTCs. No parts, no part numbers, blah blah blah. He thinks you have to buy a completely new assembly.

Well theres a guy I know who thinks gear ratios dont mean a thing. He had this huge blazer with a stock 350 V8 and stock gears but had 42 inch tires and had trouble turning the wheels and eventually he blew his motor and claimed it wasnt powerful enough to turn the wheels. I was like thats because you need bigger gears to handle the big tires. Hes like "No, gears dont mean anything, you just need lots of power to turn the wheels." lol. He got mad at me and left cause I was telling him that if he got 4.56 or higher gears he wouldnt have a problem instead of stock 3.73 gears. One of the biggest idiots ive ever met

You can't even blame the parts guy at the counter anymore. I went on line to find the correct hoses for my Maxima SE. I went to the Gates, Goodyear and another site and used their parts finder to match up my car with the right hoses and still got half of them the wrong part. Seems even the manufacturers just estimate what parts may fit our car, then just stick them in the parts directory and hope that you figure it out ( and keep the wrong parts).
