...and it was great.

I went and drove a new VW Jetta Wolfsburg Edition.

It is a nice car. The fit and finish are way above the Maxima. The Wolfsburg has all the options I like, and none of the fluff: 1.8 Turbo, sport suspension, Recaro designed sport seats, 5spd, leather wrapped wheel and shifter, BBS rims......

Plus it comes standard with cool stuff like keyless entry, power everything (except seats), ABS, tilt and telescoping wheel.

Hmm, all that for only $19.5K.

Plus, I had forgotten how much fun it is to drive a turbocharged car. Then with only a new ECU from APR...195HP & 245 Lb/Ft.....

I may have to sell out and get one soon...

If I had to do it all over again

I probably would have gone with the VR6 with no body kits, big exhaust, or over sized wheels. But when you open the hood it's all buisness, i.e. sleeper

HOW DARE YOU! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU MAN? EVIL! EVIL I SAY!

It is a nice car.

No it's not. The Max is superior.

The fit and finish are way above the Maxima.

Ok, now you've done it. I will be deleting random posts of yours as punishment for your sins. WE ALL KNOW THE MAX RULES AND IS THE BEST CAR FOR ANY PRICE. QUIT YOUR FLAMING OF THE MAX ON MY FORUM. What proof do you have that its fit and finish are better. Your just trying to get a flame war started.

Congratulations! You have now made "the list".

The Wolfsburg has all the options I like, and none of the fluff: 1.8 Turbo, sport suspension, Recaro designed sport seats, 5spd, leather wrapped wheel and shifter, BBS rims......

BLAH BLAH BLAH......The max has the VQ, "firm" SE suspension, seats designed by stick people, 5 speed on 5% of the models, skinny width wheels with hard-to-get-decent-tires. What more could you ask for?

Plus it comes standard with cool stuff like keyless entry, power everything (except seats), ABS, tilt and telescoping wheel.

BLAH BLAH BLAH....you're 3 or 4 option packages away from the SAME features on a Max!

Hmm, all that for only $19.5K.

Price doesn't matter. The Max is the best. GET OVER IT!

Plus, I had forgotten how much fun it is to drive a turbocharged car. Then with only a new ECU from APR...195HP & 245 Lb/Ft.....

Oh yeah? You're just a S/C away from beating that.......who cares if it's 3k?

I may have to sell out and get one soon...
Fine! Away with you!

Here's a smiley for ya:

[/sarcasm][/flame]

VWs are sweet....I regret not buying a Passat instead of the 99 Max......The 8k difference seems A LOT cheaper now....

Those VWs are pretty sweet, but they're a little too tiny, tall, and narrow for my taste. You should also wait because the stock 170hp 1.8Ts will be hitting the showrooms soon.

I've sworn to myself that my next car will be turbo and AWD. So....I too am considering going the 1.8T route, but I'm considering a 98 A4 1.8T Quattro. If you haven't heard, the longitudal 1.8Ts (A4 and Passat) actually make a little more topend power due to their better intake configuration. Initially, I will probably go with the 1.0 bar APR chip, Borla exhaust which includes a 2.5" downpipe, filter, and a heavier duty DV valve (1.8T version of a blow off valve). With this setup and the AWD, the car should be putting down about 200whp and 240wtq. Mid 14s should be pretty easy. Then when I feel rich, I will get the APR Stage III ($3800) which includes a exhaust manifold, larger Garett turbo, plumbing, and larger intercooler. This can be bolted up in a day and will make about 260whp and 320wtq. 13s should be attainable.

Not really.....for me, a 5-speed wouldn't change my opinion between a Max and Passat...

Passat's better built.....

Time to get behind the wall....

Performance wise.. HELL NO

Interior .. i just can't stop loving those blue lights (shut up Keving Chining) .. the shifter on teh Passat with the Liquid and Jelly is just so fluid and lovely.. the leather and eargonmics is exceptional... clutch was nice too

Suspension.. they both have the SUV look.. teh Passat is a tad higher in the back..

how do i know this? my ex has a 2k Passat.. and i drove it every now and then.. but it was a dog .. terribly slow

Doesn't blue = rice?

I agree. The interior for the $$$ rivals anything I've seen.

To me, the VQ is the only thing the Max has above the Passat......We test drove a V6 and 4 banger Passat slushboxes and didn't really notice a performance difference......The 1.8T actually felt peppier at low rpms....We would've gotten a 5-speed after my technical discussion of the auto with the manager....dang things are sealed with no fluid replacement procedure without dropping tranny....would've made a 5-speed a much easier choice.....

No forgiveness needed. Those 1.8t are awesome when modded even better than our max engines I beleive. For all of you that beg to differ go ride in an audi 1.8t or passat 1.8t that apr has modded. Say bye bye to the max. Plus for 4,000 you can get 300hp and 345tq I beleive thats the numbers.
If you like that car I say go for it they are nice.

Here are my VW experiences:

'96 Passat: power windows went half way down and decide to quit. Can't get back up, or down. Have to go to dealer to fix it, three times.

'97 Jetta GLX (VR6): For some reason I feel the car kind of floaty. The platic cover (which show the 5 speed and reverse) on the stick feel off in 3 years. That's cheap for a car with leather, and all other options.

'2000 Jetta: right inside door handle piece fell off in less than 9 months.

vw vs Nissan

VW's..any of 'em, including the Audi's:fit and finish= better

Nissans: reliability= wayyyyyy better.Check Consumer's Report. There isnt a VW in their list that they would consider a good/reliable used buy. So I guess it's OK to ZIP around in one if your planning on selling it anyhow once the warranty expires.

VW's: can't breathe in them..they are too small

warranties. VW's = a joke

VW nonquality

I like the Passat. The Golf and Jetta are way too small for me.

But...

I hear complaints all the time from local VW Passat and Golf owners. Warranty sucks and the electrical problems are prevalent. The diverter valve breaks easily and it's not covered under the powertrain warranty.

Check out these complaints:

I had a friend...

you loved VW's, had an 86 GTi and leased a 98 Jetta...you thought Nissan had paint problems...the GTi was ok, but the Jetta was a nightmare...he swore he'd never buy a VW again...what's he drive now? 97 Maxima..

hmm

My friend has a 99 Golf, I am surprised it is still breathing even though it has 20k miles... That guy does some serious abusive driving, no problems yet! Only a small accident, which wasn't his fault and blowing out a tire and bending a rim while going 80 down a residential street...
Overall, I think the car has fair room for a small box, the rear room is pretty good, compared to my brothers Corolla. I can also sit in the front okay, my max is just as comfortable though and it's a 93...
However, I heard things about reliability on other VWs. I am surprised though because I see a lot of old school VWs on the road all the time.

hmmm how bout get a GTi VR6, then drop in the Audi RS4 2.7L TT 380hp engine... until then, i dont like volksvagons
makin me thing about the RS4... i've seen a red one and a blue on in person.. they're beautiful... *dreaming*
but until then i'll stick to my max... max= no problems
volks= many problems and a bad stigma... haha think "i drive a VOLKSWAGON GOLF" OR "I drive a nissan maxima"
which sounds better? overcome the temptation and stick with the max
P.S. Passats are slow... so they need that nicer interior cuza all the xtra time u'll have to spend in them
