Gentlemen, Im going to look at 3 different 6sp Maxi's tomorrow. Is there any way to easiely tell if the car is equipped with an lsd? I mean without lifting it or driving and looking for torque steer? A special serial number or some sticker perhaps? Thanx guys.

Pop the hood and look at the transaxle code on the firewall. If it ends in "H" the car has HLSD and if it ends in "A" it does not.

 

silver drilled pedals come with the hlsd, although some people put them on non-hlsd cars as well to so be careful

 

Hehe or you could lay down some rubber and see if you leave 2 markings , or if you floor the gas im shure if you have torque steer there's no lsd.

Not necessarily. Some member claimed their cars came with AE pedals but no HLSD.

Yes, the other possibility. But some Maximas come from the factory with silver pedals although not being equipped with HLSD.

I thought that was on the AE cars not the 02-03's i could be wrong tho, but i do remember reading about cars that came w/ the pedals without hsld now that i think about it.

 

Jack the front of the car up and spin one of the wheels. If the other wheel doesnt move or turns in the opposite direction its an open differential, and if the wheels turn together in the same direction than it has a LSD

 

^^^ that'll be kinda hard to do when he's checking out 3 different cars tomorrow.

 

That isn't a good way to tell because the helical only works when torque is applied to the ring gear itself. The wheels spin independently even if the car is HLSD equipped. I've tried it. I've also verified my transaxle code and called Nissan to confirm. Checking the transaxle code under the hood or calling Nissan USA with the VIN to get what options the car from the factory with are the 2 easiest ways.

 

The most efficient way would be by the VIN# end of story.

If your transaxle code is RS5F50V then it has VLSD, as stated above. If it is RS5F50A then it is open differential.

 

Mine is RE04F04W. But I thought ALL AE's came with LSD. I guess I got screwed...

OK, called Nissan USA and they could'nt answer, called the dealership and got 4 different answers, in the end they don't know. So my transaxle code is RE4F04B. It's an automatic. It leaves 2 tire patches when you burnout. Does anybody know which transaxle this is?

All is not lost. You can always track down a tranny with HLSD and swap.

I found one in Canada from an 04 car. It was like $850 to my door. I did the swap and sold the old tranny to a shop for $150. It was a huge improvement. I used to spin all through first gear, spin shifting into second then sometimes spin again when I hit about 5000 PRM in second. Now it hooks so much better and is easier to keep traction once it hooks. All these cars should have come with HLSD.

Any way, the point is for not much money you can get the HLSD.

 

I can't imagine the swap being easy without a lift, but it's good to know that a swap is a feasable option. Thanx for your imput.

btw, how is that light flywheel working out?

 

The tranny swap isn't easy but it's not too bad even on jackstands. I've had the tranny out 4 times this year for various reasons. I've got the hang of it now.

If you do consider a swap try to get a tranny from an 04 car. They improved the syncros for smoother shifting and they don't get the 3dr gear grind that a lot of the 5.5 gen manuals have. It's still a direct swap.

I really like the light flywheel. I've gone back and forth between the Fidanza and stock and back to the Fidanza. The Fidanza feels like driving the car alone with an empty tank. Going back to stock feels like the car is weighed down with a full tank and a few passengers. I could definately feel the difference.

 

The Sentra SE-R tranny could bolt up, right? According to the fsm it has better gearing as well as hlsd. That would kill two birds with one stone. Plus it runs a bit cheaper...

I finally picked up my Maxima yesterday for a final price of $10700. It's a burgandy 2002 SE with 62k miles and no options to speak of.

Origianlly we agreed upon 11900 but in their ineptitude the dealer sent the title to Linden OH not Linden NJ - this caused a one day delay and as such I could not pick up my car Sunday and lost a day of work as well. This made me a bit upset and to make a long story short a few not so kind words with the general manager went a long way in terms of price, new brakes, tires and battery.

 

very nice man... talk about a deal, most people pay that much for a 2000 w/ the same milage
