how much to replace rear brake caliper?

does anyone know how much it would cost to replace the rear brake calipers on a '02? or can i just get the piston fixed somehow? I believe mine are frozen cause I had a really hard time pushing them back when changing the pads.

Did you remove the brake cylinder cap before trying to reset piston? Naturally piston will be difficult to push back in if cap is stilll on (due to pressure). Make sure you use a brake caliper piston tool when depressing piston or else risk damage to piston and caliper.

You know on most imports on the rear calipers you have to twist them to compress them right?

each should go for around $300 call DaveB.. autozone might have them cheaper.... or you can just buy the repair kit and do it yourself

thanks for the replys. yes i know that they twist back in. it was just that when i tried to twist them back in it too a lot of force. so i believe that they are frozen and need to be fixed. i don't think i'll have the time to rebuild them myself. how much would the dealer charge for a rebuild?

I didn't even think about this...now it makes sense. The last time I replaced my pads, it took me about 30 minutes to turn and compress each rear caliper piston. I know they were not seized so I was wondering why it was taking so long!

Tim, do you know why they charge so much for the rears? My front 6th gen calipers were only $60...

But yes, you do have to twist the piston to compress it...either use a pair of pliers very carefully or go to autozone and rent a piston compressor...

hmm, the one i rented was a brake caliper piston compressor, and it had a clamp type thing with different size adapters that had two pegs that went on a disk that rotated the piston while compressing it...

like this:

Why use that to compress it when the other tool is much simpler and cheaper I'd imagine... If all you need to do is compress it..

Make sure and line up taht nudge behind the brake pad also.

No you cannot use a c-clamp for the rears...
