FYI: Progressive Auto Insurance WILL Cover Custom Car Modifications...

Just thought I'd pass this tidbit along to my fellow orgers.

I recently renewed my auto insurance policy, and I was quite pleased to discover that they WILL cover up to $5,000 worth of CUSTOM automotive parts. That's right. That means your CAI, coilovers, rims, amps, HU, subs, etc. CAN be covered against accident/theft/vandalism.

In order to prove the components worth, they are going to require a receipt...OR...in the case of my car, and appraisal from a custom auto shop (my interior is heavily modified).

Now, I don't know if this is even available from other insurance companies, BUT, I know Progressive has it. It certainley has let me sleep a bit easier, at least.

Well did you make sure they knew about these mods BEFORE the accident? You can't expect them to cover these things if you didn't pay a premium for them.

Yes, they did know I had aftermarket parts + audio system. They also said to prepare receipts...to give to the rep... and I did. Then I talked to someone else and they said that they wouldnt cover anything. I tried to take off the parts but they wouldnt let me. I could only take my personal belongings.

Most insurance companies do not charge higher rates when you have custom equipment...

State Farm did not neither does progressive. The only insurance I had that charged you more was Esurance (worst company ever).

But I keep all the reciepts for all the mods I put on and I also keep up to date detailed photos of the entire car. That way if anything happens, no one can argue about what was on my car or what kind of condition it was in...

Yes, but when you think about how much time/money was put into it, I'll gladly pay the extra $20/month.

For Progressive, you MUST have a rider on your policy with an updated appraisal and receipts on hand in the event of an accident involving total loss.

Several years ago, I was with Progressive and totalled my GXE show car. after 4 months of haggling with them because I didn't have a couple of $100 receipts that I was claiming in $8,000 worth of mods. They also devalued my car by THOUSANDS stating that it was "modified from stock, thus damaged." They then took the costs of new parts to return it to stock off the value of the car, even though I showed them pictures of all of my stock interior pieces in new condition sitting in my spare bedroom at home.

After several months of this BS, I got the state insurance commissioner involved and finally wound up settling for an almost-fair price on the car and bought it back from them so that I could keep all my mods. otherwise, I would have been out about $10,000 over what I had in the car.

Progressive may SAY they cover it, but in all actuality, they just use it as a bargaining chip to devalue your car and weasel their way out of covering what you're paying premiums for.

insurance companies will do what they must NOT to pay you if they feel the car has been modified. I'm in the insurance industry, and lots of companies have shady practices like that.

FYI most collector insurance companies will aswell, along with whatever value you want to cover your car for within some very reasonable limits. It costs less for a year than a month covering a Z06 with regular insurance

$5000 gap is about $85 a year iirc . $10,000, $115ish iirc.

Any insurance company will cover any mods, restorations ect, as long as you have the car appraised, show prof (reciepts) and let them know what components they are covering.

You'll pay for that additional coverage as well.

Holy god!

This is the reason I am not sure its worth it. A "lot" of companies will upcharge the crap out of you to make you not want it. I dunno, real shady stuff. Insurance companies should have more gov't involvement. I am tired of paying premiums and worrying about having to fight to get my car covered.

Yeah, make sure you read your policies before making assumptions about what is covered.. even if it says you should be covered in your policy, there are ways they can get out of it if they want... what a scummy industry it has become..

Geico covered my mods 100% without a raise in the premium. That included CAI (when i had one), Exhuast, stereo setup (about $3500), rims on wife's car (Expedition). When the Expi got hit by a uninsured driver, they covered everything and replaced 3 of the rims (only 3 were damaged) without any questions. Geico for teh win.
