Idle problem?

Hey guys, so i dont know if you would consider this during idle or what, help me out. When im sitting at a red light, sometimes my rpms jump up and down from 500 to 1000? does that make sense? I just noticed it the other day, i thought maybe i wasnt keeping my foot on the break hard enough and they were slipping a little bit (cuz my pads are worn down and need to be replaced) but today it happened again, and i was definately holding down the break. Let me know if this doesnt make sense, and if it does what you make of it.

it has nothing to do with the brakes. im not sure what exactly could be the cause because i have limited knowledge in these areas. if anything it might be an ECU problem?

I have no idea, ive never looked before. haha, id still consider myself a newbie to a lot of stuff. My engine light tends to turn on and off at will, so im sure theres probably at least a code comin up. Ill try and check it later on, i think i remember seeing a thread that said the ecu is to the right of the gas peddle under the dash sorta?
