New Y pipe - observations

Got my Budget Y pipe in today. Had it installed for $50. It's on a '96 GLE with AT . The only other engine modification so far is a PR CAI. What should I expect? At idle I don't hear any sound that I didn't hear before. At WOT it seems to be only slightly deeper, if at all. Initial impression after 20 minutes of driving is that I dont feel any additional low-end power but it does seem to help the car rev a little stronger through the powerband. Also it seems that the car holds the gears just a little longer under hard acceleration or WOT (shifts at about 6200). From a standing start WOT sometimes makes a slight rattling noise just briefly. Is there a break in period? Is this what should be expected?

The first time I drove my car with the y-pipe installed i felt a huge diff in power. The sound didnt change to much like you said it was just deeper. That was the only mod I had on my old max but it did help a lot.

you will feel massive differences after 3500 rpms. 10-20 whp

the 1 to 2 shift becomes monstrous. especially if you have an intake.

Good call on that one seanish4042...my 95 auto SE sometimes even chirped 2nd, but while turning a long curve(not recomended)...if you want a sound from the intake, you have to change it completly, if you want it to be really loud(like me), put a short ram intake(not cold air) and it'll screem, trust me

Actually my PR is technically short ram since I shytecanned the section of piping that takes the filter underneath the car. I have a very mellow low rumble under heavy acceleration with the intake and a slight hiss at idle. But I'm not feeling the \dramatic 1-2 shift improvement that you guys have experienced. Granted, my tranny is in great condition and it does already shift rather briskly as you are describing. It seems to pull harder and longer from 3 to 4 now. Maybe my "seat of my pants" dyno is a bit off.

Another question: How did the installation affect mileage; better, worse, or the same under same driving conditions?

1--> 2 shifts becoming monsterous with chirping on automatics or manuals? I think this is where the issue lays.

Local exhaust shop (Gonzalez Muffler Shop) with employees with questionable immigration status but mad mechanical skills. He said he could fab me a non resonated mandrel bent B pipe for $30. Aluminized, not stainless.

No. Is it necessary?

Thanks for the observation Dave.

Possibly. The poster of that comment posted "95 auto SE". I presumed that meant an automatic transmission.

Actually, it did seem to have a bit more acceleration kick on the way home from work. So what have you noticed regarding mileage?

When I first installed mine I felt no difference. However that all changed after about a week. You'll defenitley feel it after 3500 especially in 1st gear. Its not drastic like your going into hyper overdrive but its noticable enough to make you saw WHOA the never used to do that!

DO IT and bring your own resonator...hell..you could even use a stock resonator to save even more money. Then buy a Dynomax SuperTurbo(its what i have) and your exhaust will sound great. A catback for 30+50(muffler) bucks seems great to me, i would go for it any day.

Wait till you drive 200 miles then tell us.
I know I didn't feel too much of a gain until then.

I will "acquire" the stainless pipe myself and get him to do it for $25. I can get resonators anywhere. Cheap competent labor is a good thing. I wonder if he does lawn work...

Driving to Baton Rouge and back this weekend. That should be plenty of "break in" time if any is needed.

I always do on every tank of gas; even around town. I'm almost fanatical about it.

I have the budget y-pipe. After installing it i didn't feel any difference at all, and i didn't reset my ECU on purpose. After about a week when the ECU started to calculate the new A/F ratio that's when i started to feel the added HP. I also noticed that i have a lose in MPG, I used to fill up once a week(on the 7th day every week) and know i barely have enough gas to make it to the 6th day. I get around 300 miles to the tank, %90 city and like %10 highway.

P.S. I chirped 2nd before the pipe so I can't comment on the 1-2 "monstrous" shifts.

I just installed the warpspeed y-pipe and WOW what a difference. I have a auto with 168000 on it and when I floor it the tires break loose and I do get a second gear chirp. The best mod for the money I have done on any car I have owned.

So I should reset the ECU? How long are you supposed to keep battery disconnected for that, I've read everything from 10 min to overnight? BTW, I have auto not manual so I don't expect tire chirping shifts.

You can but you dont have to. The ecu will recalibrate itself. If you do that the system will be listed as "Not Ready" on a code reader. The computer will calculate the new fuel air ratios, along with load and other calculations. After it has had enough time to recalibrate, you should start feeling the difference.

I was under the impression that you shouldn't have to reset the ECU... it will eventually learn on it's own right? If you reset by unplugging the battery it pretty much has to relearn everything again. ?

I heard, but dont take my word for it, that it takes 200 miles to fully relearn the ECU.

Gonzalez Muffler Shop. Market St. in Baytown, Texas.
Where the hell are you from??? Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana. it is on I-10 approximately 250 miles east of Houston. It's home of the LSU Fighting Tigers.

I just had my Budget Y Pipe installed for $90. The shop was a 5 minute walk from my office so I went for it.

I haven't noticed any dramatic changes. We'll see by this weekend. Will the ecu be affected by my stock snorkel not being on? I took it off the other day to get to the starter and haven't returned it. I've read on the org that the snorkel is the best intake for performance. I'm putting it back on tomorrow. Will the ecu have to restart its adjustments?

i think there is something that needs to be said here.

low end torque is different than high end tq (hp).

the massive increase in HP might not be felt as well as a low end increase in tq, because the change occurs at 3500-6500...after the car is already in motion. its not like you are punching a nitrous switch at 3500, rather the needle will simply move faster through the range than it used to. (your car is moving faster than it used to as well).

i still havent gotten to top speed with my wsp y. i used to get 120 without it...im thinkn that number will be higher...or at least achieved at a lower rpm.

OK. I have got over 500 miles on the new Y. Apparently the car did need to reset the ECU. I certainly feel it now. Particularly over about 3500 RPM to well past 6000. She now downshifts and pulls hard through the entire powerband like a *****. Passing is a joy now. Mileage seems to be slightly improved but I'll have to do a better test this weekend when I can log some seroius highway miles without my foot all the way to the floor. Good investment. I may get a Cattman soon and evaluate the differences. Thanks for all the comments and input from everyone.

how to reset the ecu? Just disconnect the batt for a day?? Or just turn the adjuster screw on the ECU itself to reset it?
