i had a similar problrm with my 3rd gen. i was over my friends house. and i had to take him to work in the morning. go out and the car wont start. i pop the hood to find some sticks and pinecones in the area by the washer bottle. it had to be squreles and they chewed through some wires. there was a quick disconnect there. i had to cut it out and wire the wires directly and then the car started, but i definatley know what that wtf feels like

I second the cat thing. I have an outdoor one and he keeps leaving little corpse all over my front yard.
My car is garaged, but I live in a wooded area, so the mice do occassionally come. This is where my two indoor only cats get a nice brunch! Cats will keep any critter away, including snakes and squirrels.

sounds more like squirrels or chipmunks....rats don't really eat that kind of stuff as much and prefer living underground.

Also, squirrels and chipmunks are quite a bit smarter than rats and probably will school your traps

put a few moth ***** in the engine bay. should help to keep rodents out. and put some near the base of the tires too to keep them from climbing up in the first place.

well, when i went off to school last year, my car sat outside under a cover. i put a few moth ***** around the bay and a few more in the trunk and interior. i think there is a chemical or maybe just the scent that irritates the pests enough that they look elsewhere before setting up camp. not sure if it kept anything out, but i had no problems with anything when i returned home. something to try if all else fails, i guess.

Moth ***** will most likely work, little critters hate the smell of them. However I wouldn't recommend putting any in the trunk, especially in the interior, cause they stink, and once you get it inside, it takes forever to get rid of the smell.

The active ingredient in moth ***** is naphthalene...buy a bottle and spray in some key locations...JUST STAY AWAY FROM THE INTAKES.

I've heard about mothballs before, too! I am sure that you can get them at any hardware store/Home Depot/Wally World etc.

these are definately squirrels, not rats, theres no food in the engine bay so theres no reason for rats to be there.

plus, my boss told me this story one time about how he went to start his car one day and it wouldnt turn on, opened the hood, lo an behold all the wires were chewed up, it happened 2x so he put a camera and found out that a couple of squirrels were tearing into his cars wires. after being fed up he put a little poison in the engine with some food, problem solved..no more squirrels.

and before anyone responds with a "you and ur boss are so damn cruel"....how about missing time from work, with the car in the shop, spendin hundreds of dollars fixin the wires at the mechanic...now THATS cruel.

I guess there isn't much of a night life in Canada.

We got rats around our house. They usually gotten into our engine bays for some reason. Well 1 day I kept smelling this dead smell and was like there another dead rat. Well I couldnt find the rat and one day I popped my hood and was smelling around because I could smell the dead scent and voila there was a rat sitting on top of my passenger cv joint. Dead. Either he crawled up there and got stuck, crawled up there to die or I fried him with the engine heat and the belt. I think I like frying him better. He sure was crispy. Well I guess I drove with the stupid thing in there for like 2 days. No smell when I was driving the car. Well he was a pain to get out took me like 30 minutes to get it out.

the coating on nissan wires always attract critters, my boy once started his 88 maxima and heard a fighting sound under the hood. low and behold a squirrel got caught up in the belts.

the wires attract them, and also a warm engine when out side gets cold.

btw the bastard was dead on ignition.

ive now spent $2800 trying to figure out the problem with my car. 05. 2 dealerships. 6 other mechanics. nobody knows.

i discover a squirrel and two chipmunk sliving in my engine. blew out part of the nest. they keep coming back. **** my life.

doesnt look like they've chewed anything though. thats why i cant figure this **** out.

i lose acceleration when the car is hot and it goes into limp mode.
and just the other day the dash lights kinda flicker and what not

Sorry but couldn't help but laughing but I understand your frustration. I have heard story about mices chewing wires and etc in cars. I thought that was unheard of but later on I find out that it happens to people who live by the mountains. That is a occurring problem. Mothballs usually will ward the critters away. I hope the damage is not significant on your car.

I had one store hundreds of acorns inside my air box. They used the intake as a runway into the storehouse airbox. Had to attach screen wire over the air intake snorkel to keep them out. We get field mice and chipmonks inside the engine bay. They like the cover and move in real quick. I'll try the mothball trick because there seems to be no stopping the little bastards.
