gas strategy I just thought of (nervous)

here is an idea, which to most of you might sound stupid but for someone who really doesn't drive that much he/she could save a couple of dollars each week. Lets say someone has a limit of $20 for gas each week and the tank is near empty. Instead of filling up at 2.27 for premium can they just put in a couple of dollars worth, then when the prices fall a couple cents add another couple dollars worth and keep repeating this until the tank is full? is it okay to do this or does the gas tank always have to stay full, how about during winter? have any of you tried this before?

In an older vehicle running the tank to the bottom may cause the fuel pump/filter to pickup all sorts of crud in the tank. Not sure if your car has an in tank fuel pump. The in tank pumps are cooled by the fuel surrounding it. Letting the fuel get too low can cause the pump to overheat.

In the winter...keeping a low tank will get you stranded eventually. Water in the air condenses in the tank during freeze thaw cycles. Eventually building up to a concentration in your gas that dilutes it too much to burn properly, and causes your fuel lines to freeze up. I'd never let my tank go below 1/2 in the winter for this reason.

Of course maybe its worth a tow and a replacement fuel pump to save a couple bucks on gas each year?

Using 10% ethanol-blend gasoline will eliminate the problem of moisture in the gas tank.

Putting in a couple of dollars at a time doesn't make much sense, after all the vehicle has to be turned on and off. Put in $10 and call it a day.

Gas prices are going to continue to trend down with the drop in oil prices.

If I see constantly galling gas prices, I usually fill up $15-20 worth. Once I see gas prices stablize and stop falling for a few days, I fill up in full.

Makes no difference. The time it would take to have to stop every few days to fuel up would negate savings, if any.

is your time not worth money? stopping at every gas station thats lower than tthe previous every couple of days would be a total waste of time, add all that time up, and you could actually be losing money instead of doing something better with your time, like MAKING MONEY!

Do this instead:

Don't drive WOT.

Try to get all what you have to do done at once. The less ofter you go out to do something, the less gas you'll use.
Cold starts use alot of gas.

Keep your speed under 55 at all times.

Keep you tires inflated 2 psi above the pressure suggestions posted in the car (never exceed the side wall pressure however) and check the tire pressure twice a month, especally as it gets cold!

Make sure the air filter is clean.

Use 91-93 octane. In the VQ you will get the best MPG with higher octane gas.

Enjoy watching gas prices fall!

You'll waste the money you save driving to the gas station
