Friend's max got hit, airbags went off--totaled??

Somebody pulled out in front of my friend's max and he t-boned the guy. Other guy got the ticket. We're both wondering if its a total loss or not. Here's all the damage:

gash in tire, will need to be replaced
hood
both fenders
headlights
fogs
bumper
radiator bent into the engine, making fan noise
air bags blown
and obviously, paint.

I'm thinking the car is a total loss, its a 97 5spd SE with 138k miles, completely loaded besides heated seats.

what do you guys/girls think?

Just did the same thing man, only it was my own stupidity. Any accident where the airbags go off on a car that old, it's pretty much done. Between putting the airbags back in, and the actually damage to the front, it's usually considered a write-off.

Smartest thing for him to do is buy back that Maxima and get another. Easy 5Spd swap, interior swap (if the new Max has a nasty interior), ... you get the point.

He can then part out the rest if he wanted.

How much do you estimate he'll have to buy the car back for?

Part of me wishes someone took a hammer to my hood so I can get some weight reduction (CF).

Then the next day someone would steal my car, grind every gear, and then, right before he finishes, he does a 5th to 2nd and blows my engine.

3.5 and VLSD anyone? God I hate money

i did way less damage to my 96. totaled, sorry mate.

the guy at the stealership told me that when airbags blow, that adds $4k to the damage. $1100 for driver, $900 for passenger, have to check the seats, replace the seat belts, and check the mounts for the dashboard.

There are no 5spd 4th gens in our area that arent over 150k miles. If anybody has one for sale and is willing to meet up somewhere close, then PM me or something, because he needs a car really fast.
