Shuts off when at a light or idling....hmmm

Hey all! i just got a 96 Maxima SE automatic with 215,000 miles on it.. I know it is high but it rides great! Anyhow i took it to the shop cuz it woulndt start .. when i drove it i was at a light and i notices the rpm metter went below 1000 rpm to half and then it shut off.. after a couple of starts it went back on... the only way it would stay on is if i reved it up at a light while holding the break. if i was noot reving it it would not stay one... anyone have any idea what the problem could be... just got the max and I LOVE IT. i had a 98 contour and even with the amx running like this it is better lol ... it has a K&N fiulter and a exhaust just to let you know

yeh, theres a how to in the sticky, maybe like the third or fourth one down... since it is an older car you can also try doing other maintenance things if it hasnt already been done, maybe it'll help your car in general (fuel filter, clean tb, pcv valve, air filter, injector cleaner, etc.)

well im sure there are a few things that CAN cause ur car to stop like that, i know when i had to do the same thing to my car at idle (rev the engine) it was a leak (tb gasket)...i replaced that and the idle was restored but very high, like over 1k so i messed with the iacv to get it back near 700

The credit goes to Mango95SE for this procedure.

Tools needed:
10 and 12 mm sockets
3 inch socket extension
universal joint (swivel pivot socket thing)
12-inch rachet (a short rachet may not work - need something to apply a lot of torque to loosen the bolts
Philip's screwdriver
rag
throttle body cleaner

1. Unplug the 4 connectors from the IAC assembly. Undo the hose that connects teh IAC to the intake assembly.

2. The metal bracket holding up the gray-colored connector is blocking one of the IAC mounting bolts. Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolt that holds the metal bracket. The bolt is just below the purple connector - you have to twist your head and crane your neck around to see the bolt.

3. Remove the 3 mounting bolts using the 12mm socket. The lowest bolt may require the Universal joint.

4. Pull out your IAC valve and clean it w/throttle body cleaner, rag, and old toothbrush.

You may even want to separate the plastic valve to clean it more thoroughly. Use a philip's head screwdriver, but make sure it is a snug fight. It's on there tight and if you don't have a good fitting screwdriver, you could ruin the screw head.

Reinstallation is just the reverse of these steps. It may be easier access to the IAC if you remove the whole air intake assembly, but it's not necessary.

Ok cna this be done by a rookie and does anyone have a pic of IAC and where is it located.... i am wondering if i should replace it or if i should just clean and adjust it...

it sounds like your Mass air flow sensor to me. I had that same problem. the car would run fine, but as soon as i come to a stop the car would cut off, and would give a choppy idle. Good luck with your problem
