New Project Dorm Speakers! Obscene amount of pictures [56k grab a beer]

Well.. im sure you have seen my car audio thread [ http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=485814 ].. my MTM speaker thread [ http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=490452 ].. my HT Subwoofer thread [ http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=492244 ]....

so what is one to do next?

Build more speakers obviously!

These speakers are for my dorm in college. Only problem is.. I have no idea how they will fit..

but they will... somehow!

First.. the intro:

The goal here AT FIRST was to build small bookshelf speakers that could put out enough

bass to not need a subwoofer. Well.. that didnt happen. Instead I decided to build my first three

way design. (The MTM are two ways) The goal turned to be.. i want something that can get real

loud and encompass the full audio spectrum.

Design:

Unlike the others which are made from MDF, I made these from Red Oak.. pretty expensive at 40

dollars a sheet but very nice looking.

First Shipment comes in.. from Parts Express:

DAYTON XO3W-375.3K 3-WAY CROSSOVER 375/3,000 Hz

DAYTON DA175-8 7" ALUMINUM CONE WOOFER

The Pyle pro tweeter and the Dayton midbass and a 12" EHQS from elemental designs

You cannot beat 40 dollars for a 12" subwoofer.
This thing is humongous lol

The sub is happy in a sealed 2 cubes... so thats what its gonna get!

The exterior dims are 26" high, 14"wide and 13" deep
this gives 2.038 cubes.. subtract the tweet and mid.. and its very damn near close lol

Did I mention that these are made out of 3/4" oak? When you cut it the sides are plywood looking,

so I used this "oak tape" (dunno what its called)
Before:

After:

Breaking in the 2 EHQS 12

So after putting together these beasts, it was laquering time!
1st coat:

The color is "bombay mohagony." I put on three coats of it, and two coats of clear laquer to give

it an unbelievable shine.

The whole interior of the box is caulked.. including the speaker cup [even though it had a gasket]

So after 5 coats total, time to mount the crossovers

EHQS 12 Sub:

A few shots of the whole thing [lighting in my room sucks for pictures!]

I am just waiting on the amp to get here... a QSC rack amp.
These are going to be fed 300w rms each [4 ohm] from the QSC which gets the signal from an Acurus

L10 preamp.

Maybe some more pictures later when the amp gets here.

For now i just quickly hooked it up to a vintage kenwood amp and for only 70w they got really

loud!
The speakers are all pretty highly efficient.. the tweeter is 99db!

Thanks ascendant.
The crossovers [2] were 90 bucks
speaker terminals .. [2] - 2 bucks
Tweeters - [2] - 17 bucks
midbass [2] - 36.30
shipping - 11.91
subwoofer [2] w. shipping - 92.31
Sheet of Oak - 43

Total:292.52 for both

not too bad at all.
The preamp was 130 bucks [found a great deal.. its worth at least 300]
The amp was 150.. also a great deal

Mendon, I too was surprised at the pyle.. but this bullet tweeter looks very nice aesthetically.. and in the small test run i had it was very clear and verrry loud

Since its an enclosed box, wouldn't the sub effect the midrange when it hits??

Do the boxes really need to be that deep. Those things are pretty big.

Luquire.. the boxes need to be that big because the sub needs that much internal volume.

yeah it did come out big.. but as they say.. bigger is better haha

believe it or not.. those holes were cut by hand with a jigsaw.

I wish I had a router.. but i don't.

I don't think the sub will affect the mid.. but I guess I'll see soon.

Nice job Ilya. Did you consider making the sub a separate chamber?

The sub needs 2 cubes to perform correctly in a sealed box... so the whole box is its chamber... the mid could have had its own chamber.. but i dont think it will be necessary

thanks for all the compliments guys

According to wikipedia:

In general, the job of a preamp is to amplify a low level signal (possibly at high impedance) to line-level.

The preamp also allows you to adjust thing such as volume/balance/etc

The damn QSC amp was lost by fedex in shipping and they are trying to find it... GRRR!!!!

Good job, you will destroy your mid-range though They make a plastic cone looking thing that protects the mid from the back for this kind of setup. I am sure parts express must have it. The finish looks really nice but it would look nicer IMO if you sunk the screw heads into the wood and filled them up with putty before staining the cabinet. Very good job though.
