Is $160 too much for a Consult-II ECM update under the NTB03-022 TSB?

Is $160 too much for a Consult-II ECM update under the NTB03-022 TSB?

Hey-
Just had my car serviced this weekend and I wanted to get some feedback from others who had the same TSB done (NTB03-022, Accel. Hesitation).

First, I had to argue with the dealer for them to even re-program the ECM without selling me a new MAF in the first place. I have an '03, so, having read the service bulliten myself, I know that it directs you to try the reprogram first.

They finally do the reprogram, I fork over the dough, and I drive off. Car runs great.

I start thinking about how little work they actually did, and I check the TSB, and it has a section under the claims info table on page 1 that says "FRT 0.5 hrs". I check my bill, and they charged me $160 for the labor to "diagnose" this problem.

And they still swear that I need a new MAF, even though my car now run awesome.

Is this too much? how much did other people pay for getting there ECM updated? Did anyone else have to jump through these hoops to get them to do the reprogram?

Also, should I worry that their documented diagnosis of needing a new MAF will come around to bite me in the A$$ later? (i.e., they blame some other later problem on me not replacing the MAF when they said I should)

That's all for now; thanks in advance.

Yeah, that's pretty high... A half hour should only be around $50 or $60, and it should not even take a half hour to re-flash.

Sounds like it's time to find a new dealer.

Good to hear your car is running well now.

dealerships dont charge for 1/2 hour of work. they have big signs that say "minimum 1 hour labour"
they charged you for an hour of labour and the extra for using the consult to fix the problem. charge is a lot...but not too high

doubtlful...its around $50 (on the side) for a timing advance and the TSB update takes longer and is more involved

It's not the dealerships. The service departments (at least in California, no suprise there...) is unionized. I added a 100K warranty on my rig because the rates were outrageous. The dealer claims that they have little control over what the union and Nissan of America agree upon for rates. They just roll with it. Take that for what its worth but knowing California, I tend to believe it.

More schwarzenegger, less Angelides.

I quite agree except that I never found a shop that has a consult II besides the dealer. Sometimes you're forced to go them.

Funny...I had both done for free. And many of my friends had theirs done for $20. He's right, if you know someone, slip him a 20 and he'll do it for you.

^^^ I just asked my service guy if they could bump my timing and he had a tech do it for $20 billed not cash... I get the idea that dealers have a bit more say than you think. When a dealer tells you they CANT do something take it as more of a WONT. There is almost always room for negotiation.
