detail session ... clay -> Z-PC -> KSG -> S100 (lots of pics)

yo guys,

I picked up an '04 G35 last week... black/black of course

The car came with alot of swirls and some holograms from bad buffing. Needless to say I was really looking forward to detailing it ... spent all of Sunday doing so.

Just wanted to post a pic-by-pic journal of what I did and it's results.

At first, I was thinking of naturally going from Zaino PC to Z2 ... but I always felt that KSG looked better on black. Looking at the instructions on both products, the zaino PC leaves no fillers or oils so I proceeded to follow it up with Klasse SG. Then topped that coat with S100 (same as P21S).

Pre-Clayed - tells you what I had to start off with

I used Clay Magic to clay it around ... man the car was pretty dirty.

Clay

Clay piece after just 2 panels (hood and a door)

Hood after being clayed - I noticed some swirls disappear ... just made sure to clay in 1 direction swipes.

finally, coat of SG + S100 - hand applied

It's always fun to experiment with products ... i'm glad I went this route (ZPC -> SG) ... turned out great. I'd really recommend ZPC because it did an AWESOME job getting rid of most, if not all, the swirls and holograms I had on the paint.

From here on, it's just layering S100 until the rain season comes and goes.

Looks great nadir! Nice job. Looks like that paint was in pretty poor shape for an 04. Any mods planned for it?

Is that your cat by the Max in the second pic?

thanks! yeah the paint wasn't that great ... sorta used it as a bargaining chip to lower the price of the car when I picked it up last week. Mods are sort of on hold till the end of this year or early next ... just getting it tinted next week. The down payment sort of set me back lol.

yeah that's my cat .. haha didn't even notice that. He actually ruined the car a a bit later that day. He walked all over the hood ... his damn little paw marks would not go away! they left microscratches wherever he walked.

I am sorry, but just the pure sexiness of that finish deserves a bump.

That is awesome man. I am definetly going to use your experience as some knowledge. My car looks similar to your before pics, just a few more scratches, so I need to do the same man. I really am impressed. Looks awesome.

Hey man, I am wondering, would a coat of Meguiars be ok instead of the S100?

which one? if it's pure carnuba wax, then I think it should be ok ... cuz that's what S100 is basically.

That looks amazing, how long did that take you? I have a silver car with swirls on the hood and roof. I cant seem to get them out. And the doors have a very rough texture. need to try that.

it takes a couple hours for each day in a weekend.

For rough texture, I definitely recommend starting w/ the clay bar.

nadir, very nice job on the detailing. i just picked up a 04 max, looks just like yours [the paint condition]. couple of q's:

1) where did you buy the materials?
2) overall time & cost
3) i am assuming that you used clay lube?

TIA,
Brian

thanks all!

brian - most of the stuff I bought are online ... check out: zainobros.com

There's alot of time invested in this ... maybe 6 hrs total over a weekend.

The products themselves total under $50 i believe .. but i've spent wel over $600 for various products, tools, pads, etc. You can get started with about $200 though, with an orbital, pad and decent products.

Yeah, I used detailing spray as lube with the clay.

Awesome job!! That black mirrored finish sparkles. Is is necessary to use the spray lube with the clay bar or can warm soapy water work also?
Thanks!!

thanks! umm ... i think the 2-3 bux for detailing spray would save you alot of time and hassle than warm soapy water .. but I think it should be an ok substitute. Detailing spray usually comes w/ most clay bars on the shelves.

I tried to use clay one time before and the clay block that came in the kit was hard as a rock after I took it out of the plastic. So hard that I was actually scared to use after one pass, I though it left a scratch. When you first open the clay do you break in to small pieces and create those little waffers. The clay I used was so hard I could really tear it apart to make smaller. Did I just get a bad box? Do you also spray the panel and the clay before making a pass?

Thats not normal for the clay to be so hard, however you should be able to spray some detailer on it and soften it up. Either way, you definitely need to keep the surface you're working on lubricated with plenty of detailer. Some people even just use a water+soap mixture. If the bar starts to stick to the paint, then you know you need to hit it with some lubricant.

The reason most people break the bar into smaller pieces is so that if you drop it, you're not out the entire bar. I usually break it into 3 different pieces.

I've used S100/P21S before it holds well and looks good even after repeated washes and dry wipe downs with a microfiber towel. Beads great too. I do layer waxes anywhere from 3-6 coats though. After about a year there is some marring but overall looking good.
