Cold Start Idle Surge

The Max's idle has been surging during cold starts. It'll crank up fine and do the fast idle for about 1-2 secs then go down to ~500rpms once or twice (without fail) and then continues to fast idle. Everything's fine after those surges. No CELs.

I recently replaced the PCV valve with an OE one all hoses I removed are connected again; nothing's cracked I even replaced the PCV valve again with another one same deal.

Any ideas? I won't have time until tomorrow to check it over again. Thanks guys.

Try adjusting the Set screw on top of the IACV...stickies.

Read the first post on the How-to Stickies. About the TPS sensor and such.

check your fuel pressure, perhaps the pressure regulator is shot. i too have the same problem and i actually talked to a guy i work with and he said he had a similar problem, once he replaced the regulator it ran like a top. i yet need to check the fuel pressure, but it's something to check. once i get around to it, if soon, i'll let you know what i find.

How do you check the pressure?

Thanks. Keep us updated. If time permits I think I'll pick up a new FPR from the dealer and see how it goes.

My 99' use to idle at 2000 rpms on a cold start and then would fall to 1500 rpms for a minute then slowly go down to a normal 600 rpms. I did not like the high rpm start so I cleaned the TB, IACV and changed the fuel filter. Now my max is cold starting at 2100 rpms and then falls back down slowly. The rpms also rise to around 2000 rpms when I disengage the clutch to shift gears while driving. It stops doing this when warmed up. Any suggestions on what is going on? The TB and IACV were not very dirty and the car only has 65k on it.

Thats perfectly normal cold idle operation.
There is nothing wrong with your car.

Maybe going to 2k on start up, but why does my car rev up when pushing in the clutch? Like I said, this just started happening after I cleaned the TB and IACV.

I'm going to need to borrow a pressure gauge but in the last couple of days, I've been priming the fuel pump before I turned it over and the idle didn't surge. I heard the fuel pump squeel one of those times. It sounds more like the FPR as an old Escort I had previously had a similar issue, we replaced the fuel pump and it did the same thing.

I'll order the FPR and report back.

By the way, anyone experiencing worse fuel economy?

Have you tried adjusting the default idle speed at the throttle body?
TPS unplugged, enigne completely warmed up, adjust the default idle speed on the throttle body to about 600 RPM's. Turn off the engine and reconnect the TPS. Start the engine and make sure the idle speed is within specs. If it's not, adjust the IAVC bypass to bring the idle speed back to spec.

It's normal for the idle to hold up slightly during a shift, the manual ECU is programmed to do that. But your 2K RPM's is a bit high, perhaps that adjustment will help.
