Bad fuel pump???
Bad fuel pump???
So it started lunchtime with some rough idling while sitting at long lights. On the way back to work I get a CEL 0903 evap flow control valve or something. I think nothing of it and decide to give it a look at my leisure over the weekend.
Driving home it's running fine til it warms up and then it started hesitating. The tacho was cutting down to 0rpm very quickly, I know the engine was still spinning coz the car was moving but that made me think electrics.
I manage to pull off the freeway but as I'm driving it gets worse and worse. I pull over to the side and it finally stalls and I'm hearing this ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka from down by my left leg. That would be the fuel pump relay right?
Seeing as this pump has pumped nearly 7000 gals of gas is it fair to assume that I should replace the fuel pump or is there something I should check first?
Like the fuel pressure regulator?
I had a new fuel filter 1000miles ago so I doubt it's that.

Guess I'll start with checking volts on the fuel pump.
Move to seeing if gas spurts out of fuel filter when hose removed
then see if gas spurts out hose when engine started.
Could the MAF prevent me from starting?

Well I just went to pick the car up from where it stalled and it started right up. Drove the 10 miles home no problem, no sign of roughness/hesitation.
Any chance it could be a bad battery or weak alternator? The headlights seemed bright enough last night but that's one difference from now?

Well, I checked the evap vent control valve (code 0903) and the solenoid works when 12V is applied. I figured as much because I replaced it last year. Cleared the CEL and it hasn't come back.
I cleaned the MAF and replaced the PCV. Car is now running better than ever. I guess the MAF was dirty.
However, I'm not convinced I solved the stall/cutout problem. I don't hear that relay clicking any more.
Should I replace the fuel pump anyway?? Any comments/suggestions would be greatly welcomed. I'm not feeling good about driving the kids to school on Monday!

So I talked myself into a new fuel pump.
$180 later
Hot damn if that wasn't the best performance improving modification I've made. Better than a new KS!
WOW!
I can't believe how much more power there is. Strongly recommended. If you've replaced a KS you'll probably benefit from a fuel pump too.
I won't know if this has fixed my intermittent stall problem for a week or two but to see such an improvement makes me want to get out there and find out!!
