Before I bribe the Nissan mecanic ...

I have been running Sunoco Ultra94 for months and would like to do the 17 degree timing advance now.

What kind of gains are we looking at here?

Anybody dyno results on a bone stock 2001 AE 5speed?

haha, don't expect a difference like night and day.

Basically it's like this:

you feel a little bit more low end torque, that's about it.

What I did was I did the VIAS removal because my VIAS was broken, and the result of that was super low-end torque loss. After I removed the VIAS, I went in to the Nissan dealer to get my timing advanced, by doing so I gained part of that low end back. It's not a miracle mod, so don't expect too much.

What he said.

OTOH, you will feel a huge difference if you don't use 93+ octane. My wife "did me a favor" and filled 89 oct in my car and it was s l o o o o w w w... It took me a while to figure it out, after asking her. I couldn't wait to burn that crap out of the tank.

i recommend not doing it... had it on my old car and it did absolutely nothing. at most you will gain a hp or two literally.

We have lots of Sunoco 94 in Canada.

If you want to get a kick out of additional timing, get an Emanage Ultimate, I run mine advanced to 40 deg at the track throughout the RPM range. 1 or 2 deg's won't be noticed.

The bottom line is that the timing advance is not to gain "dyno" horsepower. The improvements are quicker revs, throttle response, and smoother idle. DO NOT expect significant actual power gains. That is not what the timing increase is intended for...

Actually there is quite a bit to be gained from timing. To give an example, I used to run with the knock sensor unhooked on my 2k2 and the difference in the 1/4 mile was over 1 second, thats a lot of HP. With my present car it dropped over .4 in the 1/4 from stock timing to +40. Takes a lot of HP to do that.

obviously when combined with other power adders the difference will be more. But for the "average joe" they shouldn't be expecting any huge power gain for regular driving.

I wasn't looking for crazy gains nor was I expecting it for a 2 degree increase. I know this is a minor modification. I just wanted to know if it was worth while. For quicker throttle response and smoother idle I think it's a green light if I'm already using 94 Octane.

Thanks for the feedback.

I consider it to have been worth it. Most 3.5 guys do not get as much change as the 3.0 cars do (we did mine and a 3.5 at the same time).

For $25 or so, it is worthwhile.

3.5L should be expecting better throttle response....3.0L guys should be expecting better throttle response, and some low end torque to go along with it...
