How much for a tranny job?

Per my other posts, I am pretty sure that I will be in dire need of a new tranny shortly.

From what the mechanic at the dealer said, it sounds like a chipped gear or metal in the system that is grinding grooves in to the gears. Basically there is a knocking-whining sound in 1-2 with less noise in 3-4-5 (though I think it's getting louder in those gears)

What pre-christmas present should I expect to be giving for a new set of gears? While they are in there I will also consider doing the clutch (176 kKM/110kmi) and whatever bearings are serviceable.

Consider doing the clutch? It's alot of work to replace the tranny, might as well do the clutch while the tranny is out.

how much depends on who does the labor. Anytime anyone says "transmission" they think gobs of money and tranny shops pretty much charge what they want. In reality manual transmissions have a very basic theory that has been around for a long time. If you have the mechanical skills/tools to pull the tranny, you should be able to pull the tranny apart and see what gears/synchros need to be replaced with little reading. Just keep in mind that if you have winding/grinding in one or two gears and you continue to drive your vehicle with that metal in your trans you will destroy the other gears and synchros and it would actually cost more for the parts than to buy a reman.

5thgenmaxima,

I have nor the knowlege nor the patience to do a job myself.

At this point I am expecting to have have rebuilt the transmission or to find a rebuilt / salvage unit.

Thanks got the input!

www.car-part.com typically has decent prices on used/junkyard units. Labor is geographic specific.

ditto... as a rule, anytime you have access to the clutch you always replace it since it is so much trouble to get to.
