If you have not modified your intake or exhaust, take the car to your dealer right away. If you have modified either one, report your modifications here and we'll try to help you.

Doesn't turbo hiss when it's spooling up? J/K. It's your intake if you have one. If you don't, take it to your dealer to get it checked out.

Mine does the exact same thing and has for about 10k miles and I have not done a thing about it. I am not too worried about it. Sounds like air leaking into the intake from somewhere.

it's probably your intake making that noise at half-throttle. the noise should disappear when you are @ full throttle tho...btw..this has nothing to do with your filter being dirty or anything....just another aspect of owning an open-box filter...

Did you ever get an answer on this? I found this post through a search on "hiss" on 5th Gen's. I just bought a 2001 Maxima SE Anniversary Edition, and although I overall love the car, this hissing thing is getting tough to live with pretty quickly. Its pitch is such that you notice it, even with the stereo on.

I also have the rear window thing going on, but at least there's a TSB for that....

Anyone have any help on this at all???

I used to blame it on my Stillen POP, but now that I've gone back to stock it's still there justed MUTED.

The stock intake has a resonator and by design reduces the engine sound to the passenger cabin. Once you go with an aftermarket intake it just allows more of the intake noise to be heard. That's it nothing to get worried about.

Don't ask me why the VQ makes this noise, but it's NORMAL.

Thank you Ice for the reply. That's both helpful, and kind of discouraging. Actually, its really discouraging...this car is all stock by the way, no mods whatsoever.

I only ask again, because my ears are ringing after my 45 minute commute home. I hear the hissing/whistling for a long time post-drive. This morning the hiss was much more of a "whistle." And yet, this is normal? Every other Max owner just lives with it??? That seems strange. I could just see couldn't see everyone living with this.

Is there anyway at all to get rid of/lessen it? Its terrible.

Actually, I'd say a whistle is a BETTER description of the NORMAL sound the engine makes under partial/medium throttle.

Does the whistle ONLY occur when your applying slight-to-medium throttle? If yes, this is NORMAL. If it's 100% of the time(no throttle/coasting) then take it to the dealer.

Just a follow-up. Took it to the dealer for a laundry list of issues, including this one. This issue was the only one where they couldn't find anything . According to them the car is behaving as normal.

So, IceY2K1 appears to be completely correct. And yes, its only during slight-to-medium throttle, but that's about all suburban-to-city driving will allow. So in other words, its most of the time, except for the times I can coast. I really wish I knew this was a characteristic of the car before I bought it, because this ringing in my ears is annoying. Otherwise, its a lovely vehicle.

Whistle Yes .. Hiss no.

I have a whistle at idle with my Injen. But that's it. I never had anything like that with stock.

Nope, no modifications to stereo. Again, though, ICE describes it perfectly--its during light to mid acceleration. The problem with that is that if you're not racing/highway driving, almost all acceleration is light to mid.

Dealer didn't hear anything abnormal, and did fix all other issues I had without complaint. This leads me to believe that this is normal behavior, according to ICE and the dealers. I'm just surprised that I'm one of the few people bothered by it.

I'm not sure how people live with it without going nuts.
