Auto tranny check plase help me!

My car is a 93, Auto tranny with the VG30E engine. It doesn't qualify for GXE nor SE. I think (I'm not sure) that is the same that went to England and Australia.

My problem is that the speedometer sometimes worked sometimes didn't. Buy two years ago it finally died. I want to know if it is the tranny (because it failed too) or just the speed sensor. Here a new one costs $200, so I want to be sure.

I read all the topics concerning this but didn't find anything that helped me.
I want to check the tranny and I know there is a way of doing that.
* (I pasted it below)

The problem is that I don't have the O/D button. Nowhere. But my shifter has written on it the word "overdrive". There is no button!

Here is a picture of the shifter:

I discovered a switch in the passenger side that you see if you lay in your passenger seat upside down, with your feet by the headrest and your head at the footrest. It says "AT check" or something like that. It's black with white letters. If you push it to check, it comes back. I tried it and doesn't seem to do anything.

Also I have a problem with the reverse when it's cold or hot it doesn't make difference (it takes some time to engage and sometimes it doesn't).

Thanks!!!!!!!

* (Self auto trany diagnosis)
. Start engine and warm it up to normal engine operating temperature.
2. Turn ign switch to "OFF"
3. Set A/T mode switch to "AUTO"
4. Set O/D switch to "ON"
5. Move selector lever to "P" position
6. Turn ign switch "ON" (do not start engine)
7. Power indicator lamp should come on for about 2 seconds
Then:

1. Move selector lever to "D" while depressing brake pedal
2. Turn ign switch "OFF"
3. Set O/D switch to "OFF"
4. Turn ign switch to "ON" (do not start engine)
5. Move selector lever to "2" position
6. Set O/D switch to "ON"
7. Move selector lever to "1"
8. Set O/D switch to "OFF"
9. Depress accelerator pedal fully and release it
10. Check power indicator lamp

if the speedo is dead then it is either a speed sensor or the cluster.
a dead tranny won't affect a speedo like that

Ok thanks for answering!
Apart from that yesterday night and today, it only shifted up to 3rd. Never 4th, I don't know why, I didn't step to much the brake or something like that.
