Exhaust smoke only out of ONE TIP.

So today I notice than when I turn on the car in the morning, smoke only comes out of the pass. side tip. No smoke out of the other tip. I put my hand and in fact nothing coming out of one of the tips. Then I start thinking about the two sh1tty tips it had before.

AS you can see from the PIC... It had been going on for a while, cause why else would that side be more oxidated than the other. Is this a problem? Maybe the muffler is not working correctly. What are your thoughts?

This is a stock muffler. Would it hurt the car in any way... Obviously going on for quite some time, but better safe to ask.

BTW, tips don't look like that now:

The stock mufflers have a valve inside which opens up allowing exhaust gases to pass through both tips once the engine reaches a certain RPM (I can't recall what it is currently).

It's normal, when you are above a certain rpm, which I forget, both tips will flow.

You aren't driving fast enough, both my tips are coated in stuff

Nissan refers to it as a "variable muffler". It is in the owner's manual (IIRC)

I don't believe it is RPM but amount of exhaust pressure which is related to engine speek... Page 19 of the original 2000 sales book reads:

Thanks to a revolutionary valve in its muffler, Maxima ends the compromise between low-end torque and high-end horsepower. When revs are low, the valve stays closed, improving torque and acceleration. As engine speeds rise, the valve opens up to allow for greater exhaust flow and more horsepower.

According to Nissan Press Release:
The muffler uses a valve to close off one of the two tailpipes
under 2000 rpm, then opens it to increase power from that point for more
middle and high-speed power.

it should be just a simple test..

someone rev their engine 2000+ to see if it comes out of both tails...

i'm assuming its freezing where you live so you can clearly tell with the exhaust coming out

Sounds like your muffler bearings are shot.

Yes, there are no bearings in the aftermarket one
