Groaning Clutch 02 6 spd

I was just reading about the throw out bearing going bad on another guys 02 and it kinda sounds to me like i have the same problem. When i am stopped and let the clutch out to engage it and start moving, there is a fairly quiet but noticible groan, i dont really know how to descibe it.. kinda like metal on metal. Is this the throw out bearing and if so : what is it and what does it do? and do I need to get a new clutch soon or is ok for a while? and what type of perfomance type replacement clutches would anyone recommend?
Sorry, lots of questions, but it would be great if anyone could answer any or all of them.

Thanks Guys.
