Sometimes i hear a pinging noise when i accelerate! Could it be the cylindres
my friends max doesnt do that noise, how can i fix this problem!!!!! The best description of the noise, its like if a peace of metal is touching a fan !!! sometimes the noise goes away or gets a lil better when i put supreme gas with tactrol

 

If the noise goes away when you use premium gasoline, then the noise you are hearing is detonation. Your Maxima is designed to use premium fuel or more specifically, 91 octane or higher.

 

Anything less than 91 octane will cause the car to underperform. Noises/knocking in the engine bay is from, mostly, using low grade gasoline. I use 93 octane.

 

stop buying cheap gas... same happened to my wife... pinging stopped immediately after tankful of 93+ octane

 

my maxima does the same thing, it doesnt sound like pinging, almost more like a knocking noise but exactly like something hitting a fan blade, i thought it might be a loose zip tie hitting my radiator fans when i first heard it and checked but i dont see anything....is it just the cheap 87 gas i've been putting in? i thought my maxima didnt care what gas it needed, i never got a manual....i only hear the noise when i accelerate around 1900-2400rpm.....how do i fix this? and will it ruin my motor?

 

Use premium Gas Only, 91 octane or higher, this will eliminate most if not all of your pinging and/or knocking

 

That's the worst mysteriuos issue i've ever had with my car and after 1 year of searching the ORG, i've found only two possible solutions, but i haven't tried them yet...

1. Cleaning the Throttle body

2. Changing the Ignition Coils

 

The detonation noise you hear can be/has been described in various ways. Sometimes it's called knocking, sometimes it's called pinging. To me it sounds like a childs rattle noise. Nonetheless, if you are running 87 octane fuel, it will make that noise under load, either during acceleration or climbing a grade.

Can detonation ruin your motor? Yes. The simple fix is to use 91 or greater octane fuel, as specified in the owners manual. I doubt that you can save enough money from using "cheap gas" to pay for the cost of an engine rebuild.

I tried again putting 91+octane sound disappeared and engine runs more smoothly, but it says on the small fuel tank door it says use premium fuel for maximum performance, it doesnt say use premium fuel only if it could ruin the engine why not write premium fuel only, I'm far from beeing a cheap dude with my car, but i didnt see the need for putting premium fuel everytime if its written for maximum performance, i dont race, all i do is go to work, come home, go to my girl friends place i dont need performance I suspected the fuel issue has the cause of that pinging, I've changed 3 ignition coils up to now coz of failure, hope the fuel issue didnt have nothing to do with that! My car has a rattle in the RPM range of 1800-2000ish. If I hold it constant, rattle will be constant...so I guess I have knocking/pinging. Yah, I run 88 Octane.

My question is: is there any additives at would supplement for high octane gas? I'm sure most are garbage but someting like Lucas, have anything for our cars? If you add it to a full tank and fill up around 1/2 tank, I'm sure it would last a few 1/2 fill ups..maybe? I'm thinking more of a convience factor.

I'm not really sure we have HQ 93 octance is fargo. There's a BP/Amoco and a really expensive place for high preformance cars 93+ octanes

 

You're going to be spending WAY more on additives than filling up with premium. It would just cost a couple more bucks per tank full, compared to a bottle of octane boost that costs $8 and lasts one tank.

 

Alway use 91 or better octane.
