I hear that same noise, but I mostly hear it if I go out and get something out of the car when it's not running (so the interior lights turn on and so I thought it was an electircal sound of some sort - I thought it had something to do with that - but I'll listen for it all the time now.

The ticking sound is the car cooling off.....the metal expands and then contract when it cools down.....that is normal...

max'n out: I have heard of people talk about this before, although I have not had it on my car.....

It's not the car cooling off. It's not even nessacaryly when the car was runing at all. It can happen when you turn on the car to the acceserry postion. then take the key out wait a sec and then it clicks off. I do think it has somthing to do with electronics. Orginally I thought it had somthing to do with my massive sound system but i turned that all off and thats not it.
It's a wheir wheir sound the click click then when the key is removed wait then click click. I'm gonna go ask nissan tommorow.

The pump is electronic and will sound like a humming/whirring noise when it is clicked on.

It should only turn on when you put the key in start right before you crank the engine. It does not turn on in the accessory position...

I think the sound you are hearing might be the engine mount. I just made a service appointment for Thursday to have mine fixed as well as get my back deck rattle fixed.

I've got an audio file here of this particular sound. Email me and I will forward it. If this sound is what your car is doing after you shut down then it's the engine mount.

I agree, it won't come on in the accessory position, but it may come on in the "run" position (two clicks of the key)

I'm not positive about the Max...but in many cars the fuel pump kicks in when the ignition is moved to the "run" position before the car is started. This allows the fuel pump to pressurize the line so that the car is easier to start.

In my old accord, on cold mornings, I would always turn the key two clicks and let the fuel pump do its job. This also allowed the car to start in fewer cranks (which saves engine wear). The accord had a loud pump and you could hear it if the radio wasn't up. I haven't listened for it in the Max because I haven't had a winter start with it yet.

My $ .02.

That's exactly it - I remember hearing it most when I would burn a CD and I would take it out to my car to see if it would play in the Bose system - flip the car off and there's the sound.

I have a service bulletin on this issue. Here it goes:
Classification: EC01-002
Reference: ITB01-005
Date: February 15, 2001
Buzz noise after engine is turned off
Applied Vehicle: 2000-01 I30 (CA33)
Applied VIN: Vehicles built before: JNKCA31A*1T015858
Applied Date: Vehicles built before October 2, 2000
Service Information
If an applied vehicle exhibits a buzzing noise coming from the engine compartment for several seconds after the ignition key is turned off, the cause may be the electronically controlled engine mounts. Use the Diagnosis / Repair Flow Chart on page two to diagnose and repair the vehicle.

Then it has a flow chart talking about production dates of engine mounts. It says the problem exists if the changeover sound lasts more than one second or does not occur/move at all. First step is engine mount replacement, if that doesn't fix it, then ECM replacement.
Sorry, I don't have the third page of the bulletin.

Before I got my Y-pipe I would always get that ticking sound after semi-hard driving, now with the Y on I never get the ticking sound under any condition.

I don't think it's the engine mount but i'll check out the audio file. I too had an accord before the max and never heard it with that. I went to nissan to ask them. But they went to an early picnic...Must be nice.

I have heard it I think it is common in alot of 4th and 5th gens, because both of mine make that sound after I turn them off.

This is my best guess

I park my Max in a garage so it is easy for me to hear these sounds. Approximately five seconds after turning off the ignition I hear what I am assuming to be solonoids of some sort shutting off...they make a raspy grinding noise followed by one "click" at the end. Then about 30-40 seconds later (or until one of the front doors are opened) there is another "click" ..this is a solonoid shutting off that controls the retained accessory power to the windows and turns off the headlamps if you have left them on.

my car makes the noise after i shut off the engine...
but it's more like a sound of gears...clicking and wining..
my mechanic told me that it could be the MAF sensor resetting itself...but not sure...i do know that it's coming somewhere near the filter and the MAF sensor...

So has anyone gotten their car checked up and fixed about that weird noise from the engine? I just got off the phone with the service advisor and he told me that the noise maybe the result of me not having my car tuned up after the 30,000 mile mark. What a load of BS. But what did u guys do for the 30,000 mile tune up? The noise has nothing to do with the car being tuned up or not right!?

I had my rear engine mounts replaced about 3-4 months ago.. Had this weird whining noise coming from the engine after I'd cut off the ignition.. Later I can hear it constantly.. It turns out the noise of the engine running was filtering that sqeeky whinning sound..
Took it to the dealer and they noticed it right away.. It tool 2 days to fix b/c they didn't have the parts but my car is fine now..
There's a way to find out if the problem actually is your engine mount.
Lift your hood up. Pull your ebrake up all the way. Put your gear in reverse and slowly ease the gas... (Have someone watch the engine while doing this!)
If you see the engine rise, then the mounts are definitely broken... Try it again in drive and see what happens.. Usually, it's the rear mounts that's defective...

So for RBa or anyone else who had the wierd noise fixed. when u brought ur car back to the dealer and had them fix it, was it fixed under the power/tran warranty? Cuz I just passed 36000 miles.

My 1986 Maxima made that sound too, the loud clicking noise. So I doubt it is anything to worry about.... I always thought it was the starter but I know nothing about cars... It only happened when the key was in the ignition (I believe) but am not positive.

I had only 10k at the time so I really don't know & I didn't bother asking since I had warranty left over... This is an engine problem so it should be covered under the power/tran...
If they don't fix it and your engine falls off or something, you can always sue Nissan... This is a serious issue. Nissan should really inspect and fix these problems before releasing their cars to the market..

I just got of the phone with my dealer and he comfirmed the noise in my car is the motor mount. The new one is 261 dollars canadian plus it takes about an hour to install it. My car has 68000 km so they won't cover it under warranty. I think it should be covered under the power train warranty but it's not. First the paint now this!

That sucks to hear that it's not cover under warranty. Man I just passsed the 36000 mark not too long, I have 36500. Hopefully they'll just fix it and not give me a hassle. But that sound is so weird. When the key is ignition and cranked to number 2, that sound comes on. Engine mounts don't suppose to make noise if they're broken right? Do they know what the caused the engine mount to break? Could it be how hard the car been driven? I am beginng to hate the service advisor and the Nissan warranty BS. We have to pay a diagnostic fee of 102 bucks for having the car check out. But if the problem is covered under warranty, then the fee is waived. That's such a rip off. Other dealership don't charge people for bringing their car in.
Freaking Serramonte Nissan service is sucks. I'm just tired of bringing in my car every other week, just fixing problem after the other. just a streak of bad luck.
