Uh...the button stays out when you press it, keeping O/D off. Am I misunderstanding what you're asking?

Hahaha...Well alright, I noticed driving around town the car kinda fumbles through gears because of all the stop and go garbage, but when the O/D is off it doesnt do it as bad, because its one less gear to have to deal with.

Basically what I want is when I turn the car on, to automatically have overdrive off, instead of having to push the button everytime I turn the car on.

This was brought up a few times last year. I just cant seem to find the posts. Does anyone know how to set the car that way?

I'm really starting to think you have a different O/D button than me. Mine is like a pen, you push it once and it pops out, disengaging O/D. When you turn the car off, it stays pushed out, so when you start the car next, O/D is already off.

+1. Seems pretty easy to me, unless your button is broken.

Hmm, mine works by pushing it once, it turnd OD off, then push it again turns it back on, if i leave it off, and turn the car off the car automatically turns it back on....

i think it was, my 98 o/d button is a momentary switch, unlike the one in my 96 that was an in/out switch

You just need to change the switch.

That wount work either. I had an aftermarket shifter with a locking switch, unlike my 99's simple push type. It didn't matter if the switch on the a/m unit was locked in or out. When the car was restarted o/d was always engauged.

well then that clarifies the confusion . . . my '97 is either in/out, doesn't reset itself upon startup. NOt sure how to fix that.

Ok, it seems that the original poster needs to better inform himself as to the function of electronic overdrive in an auto trans. Although some mechanics of the system remain dubious to me, the basics of the concept of overdrive means a smaller gear driving a larger gear (more torque, less speed), and underdrive means a larger gear driving a smaller gear (less torque, more speed). When you engage O/D you're actually ELIMINATING a gear by distributing that gear's ratio to the remaining 3 gears (higher ratio is more torque). When your O/D is OFF you have 4 gears, that are less torquey. Personally, I enjoy keeping O/D on at lower speeds, and turning it off when on the highway for the joy of direct drive (engine and tires turn as same speed). Keep in mind, an overdrive condition is designed to keep your engine speed lower by providing a mechanical advantage (more torque multiplication), with O/D off you will have nicer response but your tachometer will show higher engine speed, which effectively burns more fuel. As for your question of engagement laziness... your idea is completely worthless since it takes one quick thumb movement to engage/disengage. Good luck!
