Successful "Did It Myself" Transmission Overhauls
Successful "Did It Myself" Transmission Overhauls
Who has successfully overhauled an automatic transmission? I have never rebuilt a transmission in my life and would like to know what I am getting into before I even attempt.
The 4th Gen stickies cover only a 5-speed tranny overhaul. Is an automatic tranny overhaul that much more involved?

While I think it's an entirely doable job for DIY, it would take a good sized clean workspace, the purcase of some special tools, plenty of time, and some serious patience to overhaul one.
In the used transmission market, I think it's far easier to find a reasonably good used auto tranny than a manual tranny. I think you'd save a lot of money and fairly low risk of problems going this route.

Know of any resources Dave? I have the FSM CD for my '97 I30t (it's actually for a '98 Maxima). Pretty good information in there. -Slopster
I've not yet gotten into automatics. Maybe when the E4OD in the truck dies but until then...
I suggest you find a good book on rebuilding automatics, since the FSM typically doesn't show the full details on how to handle certain tasks, or what tools and techniques to use when you don't have the Nissan special tools. Also see if the ATSC had a rebuild guide for this tranny, although they may not.
