V-afc2 In A 99es 3.5

V-afc2 In A 99es 3.5

This week end, we installed a V-AFC2 in a 99ES with a 3.5 2003 maxima engine. After connecting all the wires.
-black/brown: 1 inch apart brown ECU side
-Red wires: (2 on a V-AFC2) on the IG power.
-white/yellow: for MAF signal
-Green for RPM signal
-Gray for TPS

We were still left with:
-purple: vtec signal input (not used)
-pink: vtec signal output (used this one to VI switchover)
-orange : VTM???? (not used)
-dark blue : TDC (not used, is it crank pos. sensor???)
-light blue : ???? (not used)

My question is : The swap has been made with a 99ES ECU. It doesn't have the information for the VI switchover in its program. We thought about wiring the VI solenoid switch to a 12V source 15 amp and the pink wire for an output signal from the V-AFC2. This sensor has two pins (1 for power source and 1 activation/info, I assume...) In the 2002 maxima FSM, It says that the Solenoid is powered from the fuse no.20 15Amp fuse. So we hooked it up on the 12v source/cigarette lighter to do the solenoid test (if it activates/if it's powered) and the pink wire from the V-AFC2 and set to 3100rpm switchover.
NOTHING HAPPENS!!!
The 'wastegate' on the VI doesn't actuates.
2 THINGS: the solenoid shot or bad connections.?????
Is there a way to make it work???
On idle, the vacuum tube to the vacuum canister sucks air and seems to work the way it's suppose to be. We don't have the solenoid connector from the 3.5 swap to cross reference the wire colors but on the the FSM, the green/yellow is info and red/yellow is power source.
HELP!!!!!!!!! Anybody with a 97-99 manual transmission with a 3.5 swap that the VI works would be the savior...Thanks for your support!!!

I might be wrong, but I think to make the selenoid work. It need to receive a constant current on the signal tap. When the V-afc2 reach the cam switch-over point, does it send a constant voltage, or does it send just a current pulse? That might be your answer...
Anybody, who knows about the V-afc2, can confirm that?

You are getting confused... the 1999 Maxima ES, is just like an SE without leather, but with an lsd tranny. They were only sold in canada...

I dont think that VQ'ed would have post here if he had a question about Lexus....

Anybody could help here!

the unwired solenoid above the vacuum canister is the one we tried to power and to switch the VI open with the pink wire signal from the v-afc2. check the vacuum hoses routing and tell me if there's a way to get this thing working. Thanks for the upcoming answers.

On the picture, it is wired but the mecanic found afterward that is was the knock sensor connector. Same plug config as the vias solenoid plug, by the way.

the sensor that plugs into the harness for the VI, ground the and touch the power wire on the positive side of the battery, you should hear the VI click and open. Then you will at least know it working and opening.

Have you setup the VAFC with the proper # of cylinders and TPS sensor?
Did you rev the engine over the crossover point?
Are you getting an rpm signal? Have it display the rpm signal as one of the monitor channels.
Open the VI with you hand, to make sure its not stuck closed or something.

Jesus christ! was this car found at the bottom of an ocean? Rust is OWNING that engine bay .

Because VTEC also engages at a certain RPM and stays on the rest of the time- this is why you can use it to control the 00VI, but a 3.5 VI would need to close the circuit to shut it at 1800(VTEC feature on the AFC), then open it at ~3600 (I dont think the VAFC can do that, someone correct me if Im wrong).

EDIT- I forgot to add the other option of eliminating the VI stuff all together and gutting the upper manifold. More power up top FTW

Yes it does with with the 3.5. Once wires up, when the VAFCII reaches the cross over point, it will send the 12v signal to the manifold and open up (or close which ever is the proper word for it)

VAFCII can not do that, it can only change over at a given rpm. Could be benefitial if it could perform that task multiple times, but so far it cant.

You’ll lose out on the low end power. . . it depends on the type of power band desired.

We plan to keep it closed up to 4600-4800rpm. Opening it the 00vi way (1 way). Yes, we have the right no. of cylinder setup(1) and get a rpm signal(650 rpm idle hot). we revved it over the determined opening point(3100 rpm test rpm) and the acuator didn't move at all. We moved it manually and the butterflies moves. we don't plan to operate it the 2003 way (keep it open a 1800 up to 3800, closing it and re-opening it again) because of the v-afc2 range of operation (opening/closing) instead of (opening/closing/opening). Maybe not the BEST way to extract power but still have a changeover.
Would still be torquey up to 4600-4800rpm.

One thing hit me this week, the swap technician seemed to have forgotten to swap the power valve actuator from the 3.5L(the 2 way black box with the 2 vacuum nipples) (the black box in the ''vias nipples setup'' thread by ceasar's chariot). Is it absolutely necessary to have it to actuate the VI???

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!MOUHAHAHAAHAHH!!! It works and we did it without the RPM switch, just the V-AFC2. I would like to thank all the people who helped us and say to all who didn't believe it wouldn't work: ''scr...w you, look what we have now!!!'' (no offense, just proud!!!)

Hi...The V-afc2 was the only thing we used. No rpm switch since it would do the same thing as the V-afc2. I would like to thank the org. for info, VQ'ed and 97_roadrunner for their dedication and time.
