Say it ain't so!

Here's the link

http://www.autonet.ca/AutonetStories...m?storyID=2584

and here's an excerpt from that article:

"Could Maxima become one of those extraneous pieces of the Nissan Revival Plan that Carlos Ghosn alluded to when he said no cows were sacred? Difficult as it may be to fathom Nissan without Maxima, it looks as if the company is planning to travel that road."

Good God I hope not. But, I think nissan can handle it. Altima moves up into its slot, the infiniti g35 and the new maxima are in the same market area, but the infiniti handles more luxo while the maxima takes the sporty side... Kinda like a buick regal and a pontiac grand prix. It will take some good marketing, but nissan seems to be excellent at advertising the maxima (i love that sunset commercial, wish i had that on my comp!). Either way, I don't think nissan is going to drop the car that saved the company. And while it might not be the flagship (thanks to the new z) or might not sell as much (it doesn't sell much now which I like) it should still be the best 4 door sporty sedan value that not too many people know about.

The Maxima will be around for a long time to come. It will have a tough time selling next year though.

www.edmunds.com, in their first look at the 2002 Maxima SE says that production of the Maxima will drop by about 40,000. Less GXEs will be made in particular because Nissan expects that people would rather buy a higher-end 2002 Altima than a lower-end 2002 Maxima GXE. Those who want a good value in a sports sedan that can compete with the luxury market cars can still go with the Maxima SE, GLE, or the Infiniti I35.

Most fully expect Nissan to keep the Maxima going for a long time. There should be a completely new Maxima for 2003. It'll probably be a full-size monster, but it should be a blast for whatever it's going to be.

never in my wildest dream...

would I thought I would ever read something that even hinted at the demise of the Maxima while the ALTIMA soldiered on! That would be a cruel joke. So what if the Altima is AS BIG or bigger than the Maxima. The Buick Century is as big as a Park Avenue, or whatever they call it now, but that doesn't mean it is better! Guys, the Altima has nothing on the Max. I am not impressed with what I've seen in those pics. The Maxima is a much better looking package and bound to be more comforting to drive in. The interior of teh Altima looks hideous. Give up a Max for that? NO THANKS!

I guess I never thought I'd see the demise of the Z car years back, but they built it into something few could afford; or the Buick Riviera, but the quality and substance just wasn't there (I experienced Riviera...the honeymoon was over real fast). Or what even of the demise of Olds? But step back and you think, well, those choices made sense, but the demise of the staple of Nissan's fleet, the Maxima? Insane, I tell you.

It just cannot happen. I'll never own an altima, I don't care what they do for it. I'll move elsewhere.

...thanks for letting me vent...I feel better now, I think!

something you all might have missed...

This article was from a CANADIAN website. Now, I have NOTHING against Canadians at all, but the last Canadian article I saw talked about how they should limit horsepower in cars so that people don't speed, which is the most ridiculous thing I ever read.

I don't think this site is the most reputable one out there.

The Maxima is not going anywhere but up. To compete successfully in terms of volume with the Accord and Camry the Maxima would need a 4-cylinder - but that's not what a Maxima is.

Nissan moves the Altima up to this Accord/Camry segment which already has a 4-cylinder and then make a V6 optional on it just like the Accord and Camry already are.

But now Nissan moves the 6th Gen Maxima up to full-size to compete with the Toyota Avalon, which is ALSO only available with a V6 and is a much better match for the Maxima to compete with than the Accord and Camry since those are also available with 4-cylinder engines.

I think Nissan's moves are making perfect sense, and I have NO IDEA what the hell this Canadian web page is talking about. They're obviously not as well informed as the .org and REPUTABLE mags/webpages such as Motor Trend.

Relax.

The Maxima isn't going bye bye.
